Institutions promoting gender parity: The idea of utopic society

ABSTRACT

In the words of Barrack Obama “You can judge a nation, and how successful it is will be,
based on how it treats its women.” Rephrasing his words, 1we can say that “you can judge an
institution, and how successful it will be based on how it treats its women.” For centuries,
gender inequality has been a matter of great distress. Be it a nation or an institution all of it
have been a place where gender inequality is practiced regardless of the fact that the
dynamics of society demands change. Institutions no longer remain an area of social and
economic hustle bustle but an area which has great responsibilities. In early times, men
dominated the area of work but with varying conditions and several movements led by great
feminists, the sheath of patriarchal norms have been shattered to lay down the dogmas of how
and why there is a grave need that these institutions promote gender equality.

It has been observed that these institutions/organisations have blatantly failed to satisfactorily
scrutinize the preserving condition of inequality there. What these institutions require is the
idea of gender mainstreaming where a strategic approach is acknowledged by them to
promote equality among the two genders. Equality should be taught right from schools to
workplace, from homes to shrines, no institution big or small should ever be a place that
advocates gender inequality. There needs to be a shift in the paradigms of how these
institutions function in terms of education, work, pay-scale, promotion etc. all these
conditions foster the idea of gender equality. The instances like UN system where the concept
of gender architecture is given a great thought like undertaking efforts that accelerate the goal
of gender balance among employees of the UN, structured systems like this exemplify the
virtues of gender parity. Another example of promoting parity is inscribed in the Indian
Constitution itself, Sec. 39(d) conspicuously talks about equal pay for equal work for both the
genders, hence, promoting the idea of equality at workplace. In furtherance Art. 16 2 calls for
equal opportunity for all citizens in matters of employment or appointment to any office.
Therefore, this paper is directed towards understanding the underlying dynamics and
intricacies of initiatives instilled in the institutions that promote gender equality in great

hierarchy and how, if there’s any lacunae left out be fulfilled in order to foster the idea of
gender parity everywhere.

Concluding in the words of Emma Watson “It is time that we all see gender as spectrum
instead of two sets of opposing ideals.”
