Preparing WPS and PQR for API 1104

The document provides instructions for developing and qualifying a welding procedure specification. It outlines the steps to write a preliminary WPS, identify and prepare test specimens, weld a test coupon using the preliminary WPS, evaluate the test results to prepare a PQR, and finalize the WPS. It describes essential variables that must be monitored and controlled during welding.

1. WRITE A PRLIMINARY pWPS
• Identify the welding process to be used. Will it be SMAW,
GMAW, FCAW, EBW, etc.
• Weld and base metals, metallurgical properties,
• Preheat and post weld heat treat requirements,
• Desired mechanical properties, service requirements,
• And location of welds.
2. IDENTIFY AND PREPARE THE
TEST SPECIMENS
• Identify the correct thickenss and diameter and position to weld
and suitable to site welding.
• Preparation include to check clamp, tack welding needed to hold
coupon during welding.
• Identify good welder/less or no repair to be used to coupon welding
• Coupon require two welder/one welder need to finalize.
• 3. WELD A TEST COUPON USING THE
PRELIMINARY WPS

• Purpose of weld a test coupon is to prove by DT(Distructive test)

that desired mechanical possible is achieved.
• Essential variable as per API-1104 to be monitored and controlled.
• Root inspection to be done and Root NDT to be done.
• Final VT inspection and NDT to be done.(RT/UT)
• Test Coupen send for mechanical testing as per API-1104.
Essential Variable
4. EVALUATE THE TEST RESULTS
& PREPARATION OF PQR.

• Evaluate actual test result and parameter recorded during

welding.
• Qualified inspector will start preparing PQR based on actual
parameter recorded with test result.
• PQR is to be supported by all test reports of DT and NDT,
welding parameter sheet and welder ID.
Test location
Type and No. of Test specimen
4. FINAL WPS
• Once PQR is approved and accepted by all parties or stack holders.,
WPS to be generated based on PQR result and limit set by API-1104.
• Initial weld joints by use of new WPS to be test by suitable NDT’s ,
number of sample or weld to be test may be mentioned in client
spec or contract.
