INTRODUCTION
Importance of project:

This project enables pupils to understand more about infectious disease and non-infectious
diseases.

Objectives:

 Differentiate and communicate about infectious and non-infectious diseases

 Explain how infectious diseases are spread
 Separate the cause and spread of infectious disease
 Generate ideas on the mechanism to prevent the spread of infectious disease

Method:

An interview with a doctor

Conclusion:

I will learn more about infectious and non-infectious. I also will learn about how to prevent
these diseases.

RESULT AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
Ruthann : Good evening, Dr. Natasha. I am Ruthann Liew Zi Ann.

Doctor Natasha: What can I do for you, Ruthann?

Ruthann : I would like to interview you about one of the most infectious diseases
in Marudi?
Doctor Natasha: Sure.

Ruthann : Yes. Can Doctor Natasha tell me more about yourself?

Doctor Natasha: My name is Dr. Natasha. I have been a medical officer in Marudi from
about 7 years already. (2016-now) I studied in Kasturba Medical
College, India from 2008 to 2014. My first posting was at Hospital
Umum Sarawak. I served there for about 2 years before I come to
Marudi.(2014-2016)
Ruthann : What is the differences of infectious and non-infectious diseases,
doctor?

Doctor Natasha: Infectious diseases are caused by harmful organisms that get into your
body from the outside, like viruses and bacteria. Non-infectious
diseases aren’t caused by outside organisms, but by genetics,
anatomical differences, getting older and the environment you live in.
Now, do u understand?

Ruthann : Doctor, are you familiar with the topic of interest which is about
infectious disease?

Doctor Natasha: Absolutely.

Ruthann : What are the most common infectious disease in Marudi?

Doctor Natasha: For the past few years, Dengue and Malaria are the most common
infectious diseases in Marudi.

Ruthann : Can Doctor share one example of disease around Marudi that is caused
by bacteria, virus and fungi?

Doctor Natasha: Sure, Tuberculosis is one of the disease that is caused by bacteria. And
covid-19 is one of the disease that is caused by virus. Lastly, tinea
versicolor is one of the disease that is caused fungus.

Ruthann : Doctor, I would like to know what is Tinea versicolor?

Doctor Natasha: Tinea versicolor is a common fungal infection of the skin.

The fungus interferes with the normal pigmentation of the
skin, resulting in small, discoloured patches. In Malay

 language, it is known as “kurap”.

Ruthann : How is Dengue transmitted and how to prevent getting it?

Doctor Natasha: Dengue is caused from Aedes mosquitoes breeding and the water
stagnant in many places that Aedes mosquitoes can breed. I suggest the
affected arears to use mosquito repellent, always wear long sleeves and
use mosquito netting to prevent getting Dengue.

Ruthann : What are the 3 ways infectious diseases are spread using specific
example. What is doctor prediction and feedback based on the current
statistical graph from Ministry of health?

Doctor Natasha: The first way is because of air that can cause tuberculosis. The second
way is through water that can caused typhoid. The third way is through
sexually harassment that can caused AID.

Ruthann : Dr, what should I do if I got contracted by infectious disease and how to
prevent getting them?

Doctor Natasha: I suggest you to also protect yourself and maintain a good hygiene. And
if you are not feeling well consult local hospital for advice. I cannot
give u a directly suitable treatment because every disease has its own
treatment.

DISCUSSION
Infectious diseases are caused by harmful organisms that get into your body from the outside,
like viruses and bacteria. Non-infectious diseases aren’t caused by outside organisms, but by
genetics, anatomical differences, getting older and the environment you live in. You can’t get
non-infectious diseases from other people, by getting a bug bite or from your food. The flu,
measles, HIV, strep throat, COVID-19 and salmonella are all examples of infectious diseases.
Cancer, diabetes, congestive heart failure and Alzheimer’s disease are all examples of non-
infectious diseases.

For the past few years, malaria and dengue is the most common infectious diseases in
Marudi. Dengue is a viral infection that spreads from Aedes mosquitoes to people. It is more
common in tropical and subtropical climates. It is caused by a lot of water stored in drains
for mosquitoes breeding, making Aedes mosquitoes to breed easier. Most people who get
dengue won’t have symptoms. But for those that do, the most common symptoms are high
fever, headache, body aches, nausea and rash. Most will also get better in 1–2 weeks. Some
people develop severe dengue and need care in a hospital.

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite that commonly infects a
certain type of mosquito which feeds on humans. People who get malaria usually is bitten by
an infective female Anopheles mosquito. They will get typically very sick with high fevers,
shaking chills, and flu-like illness. The Marudian are advice to use mosquito repellent, always
wear long sleeves and use mosquito netting to prevent getting malaria.

The disease that is caused by bacteria in Marudi is Tuberculosis. Tuberculosis (TB) is a
disease caused by germs that are spread from person to person through the air. It can be fatal
if not treated. TB most often affects the lungs, but can also affect other organs like the brain.

The disease caused by virus in Marudi is Covid-19. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an

infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. COVID-19 can cause mild to severe
respiratory illness, including death. The best preventive measures include getting vaccinated,
wearing a mask during times of high transmission, staying 6 feet apart, washing hands often
and avoiding sick people.

The disease caused by fungi in Marudi is Tinea versicolor. Tinea versicolor is a common
fungal infection of the skin. The fungus interferes with the normal pigmentation of the skin,
resulting in small, discoloured patches. These patches may be lighter or darker in colour than
the surrounding skin and most commonly affect the trunk and shoulders.

All these disease is caused by an unclean environment because some of the people in the
village area use untreated water that cause them to have skin disease such as tuberculosis.
We have to love our environment to have healthy Marudians. We also have to protect
ourselves and maintain a good hygiene. And if you are not feeling well consult local hospital
for advice.

CONCLUSION

Reflections on the interview on Infectious Diseases with Dr. Nur Natasha binti Sherimim

I have gained valuable insights into the world of infectious diseases in Marudi. I learned
about the causes of these diseases and how to prevent them, making it an engaging and
thought-provoking topic for me to discover. The most significant takeaway was the
importance of maintaining a hygienic environment.
