Air Conditioning Design Assignment Guide

The document describes an air conditioning design assignment with 3 cases that have different starting conditions for dry bulb temperature and relative humidity. For each case, students must sketch a diagram of the equipment, present mass and energy balance equations, determine water and heat transfer rates, and sketch the process path on a psychrometric chart.

Air-conditioning Design Assignment [60 marks]

Table below listed the condition of atmospheric air before and to be achieved after going through
an air-conditioning process or processes.

To be achieved after air-

Before air-conditioning
conditioning
Dry bulb temperature, Tdb = 30ºC
Case 1
Relative humidity,  = 45%

Dry bulb temperature, Tdb = 18ºC Dry bulb temperature of

Case 2
Relative humidity,  = 40% 22ºC ≤ Tdb ≤ 27ºC and
relative humidity of 40 ≤  ≤ 60%
Dry bulb temperature, Tdb = 35ºC
Case 3
Relative humidity,  = 80%

You are required to design an air conditioning process or processes for all the 3 cases above
separately when the pressure of atmospheric air is at 1 bar and the volumetric flow rate of the
atmospheric air is 10 m3/min. Present the design on case basis. For each case, the design of
process shall include:

a) Sketch a schematic diagram of the equipment used for the designed process/processes and
state the type of air conditioning process/processes involved.
[3 marks each case]
b) Present neatly the mass balance equation for dry air, mass balance equation for water vapor
and energy balance equation for the designed process/processes.
[3 marks each case]
c) Determine the amount of water removal/added rate and/or the amount of heat
added/removal rate for the designed process/processes.
[10 marks each case]
d) Sketch the process path for the designed process/processes on a Psychrometric chart.
[4 marks each case]
