Lintel
A Lintel is a horizontal architectural member supporting the
weight above an opening, as a window or a door.

It behave just like a beam. It provides a bearing for the

masonary above the openings and transfers all the loads
acting over to the supporting walls.

Functions of Lintel
Serves as a safety measure for windows and doors.
Transfers the weight from the wall above directly to the
side walls.
Decorative lintels add to the aesthetics of the house or
building.
Lintels are used to support the fireplace chimneys.
Continuous lintels also give support against natural forces
such as strong winds and seismic shocks.

Types of Lintel
1) Timber Lintel
Timber lintels are used in mountain areas where timber is
readily available. Since wood is not fire-proof, it is an
expensive choice and less durable in comparison to steel or
concrete.

2) Stone Lintel
These are popular for building structures because of their
abundance. However, they are more susceptible to
earthquakes. Using stone lintels enhances a building's beauty
but are costly and difficult to transport due to their heavy load.

3) Brick Lintel
Brick lintels are commonly used in buildings with light loading.
However, in case of heavy loading, reinforced brick lintels can
be used as they provide more tensile strength to the building
than brick lintels.

4) Steel Lintel
They are used when the wall openings are wide and the
structural loads are heavy. Also, steel lintels are a reliable
choice for their structural integrity. However, lintel steels are
more susceptible to rust.

5) RCC Lintel
These are used for their strength, load-bearing capacity, and
fire resistance. Their adaptability to different shapes and sizes
is their biggest advantage. Moreover, they are an economical
choice.
