Some people think that the internet has brought people closer together while others think that

people and communities have become more isolated due to the internet. Discuss both these
views and give your own opinion.

The effect of the internet on communication is a topic with contention. Although some believe
that it has enhanced a closer relationships between people, others believe otherwise, and that
the internet has contributed greatly to isolation among individuals. I strongly disagree with the
former perspective. I this essay, I will discuss the both perspectives and provide statements which
support my own believes.

The idea that the internet has gathered people together originally stems form the convenience
provided by online interactions. The internet has broken down physical barriers and enables
people from all around the globe can interact at a click of an button. One of the obvious
examples is the various social media platforms. Apps such as instagram and wechat enables
friends and family to interact without the restriction of the physical barriers. Moreover, these
platforms allow strangers to discover others with the same interest and ideas, developing
friendship despite residing in different parts of the world. In addition, students can engage in
online education on the internet, allowing a more frequent interaction with classmates and
teachers, which promote students’ interactive ability.

On the other hand, the growing issue of extreme on-screen-time fuels the argument of possible
isolation brought on by the internet. As individuals spend longer periods online, it inhibits face-
to-face communications, which may potentially lessens people’s linguistic abilities. A withdrawal
from physical communications may catalyse the use of emoticons instead of describing emotions
through words. Therefore, people may use shorter sentences to express feelings when
participating in activities due to their limited socializing skills and vocabulary.

In conclusion, although the internet has allowed users to facilitate communication more
frequently, I believe that the counter effects produced by the internet contributes greatly to
social withdrawal.
