COURSE GOALS & STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Course Goal:
Accounting is a process of identifying, recording, summarizing and reporting economic
information to decision-makers. Financial accounting focuses on the specific needs of decision
makers external to the organization such as stockholders, governmental agencies, banks etc. (In
another semester you will study managerial accounting which focuses on providing information
to decision makers who are internal to the organization). You will be introduced to the primary
business activities and business transactions. You will learn how to record business transactions,
how accountants combine those transactions to create financial reports, and how to interpret the
financial reports that decision-makers use i.e. financial statement analysis.

Homework:
You will be assigned homework questions from each chapter we cover in the textbook. Your
solutions to these questions will be graded automatically via My Accounting Lab (MAL). All
homework assignments are due BEFORE the class on the due day. Clearly, it is in your best
interests to work diligently on ALL of the problem sets. Only 8 best homeworks will count (out
of 9).

Quizzes: I will also give 8 quizzes at the beginning of each class (20 points each).

Exam: Exam is mandatory unless it is excused, ahead of time, for a documented illness or
university-approved absence. There are no exceptions. Students who do not take the exam and
are not excused from the exam will receive a score of zero. There will be no scheduled make-
up exams. No extra time will be given to students who arrive late for an exam. Exam is
closed-book and closed-notes. The exam will contain both multiple choice and workout
problems.

Questions about grading

Questions about the grading of any exam or homework assignment, including (but not limited
to) requests for re-grading, must be made to me within one week of the time that the exam or
assignment is returned to you. All questions must be in writing.

Class Participation:
I encourage you to participate in all class discussion that we have. It is imperative that you feel
comfortable talking in a group situation. You should not be afraid to provide the class with your
perspectives and insights. Even if you have certain misunderstandings of the topic we are
covering, your oral communication and leaderships skills will be greatly enhanced as a result of
your participation.

Written communication:
Although the vast majority of work in this class will be in the format of computational problems,
you will also have to provide answers to conceptual issues in financial accounting. Students are
required to use correct spelling and grammar, and to write in complete cohesive sentences. You
will be heavily penalized if your written communications are poorly constructed.

Honor Code:

standards of honesty and integrity from all members of the academic community. All students are
expected to know and adhere to the University’s Honor Code. Please familiarize yourself with the

Academic Honesty Policy – Accounting Department Exam Rules

The accounting department is committed to honesty and integrity and has a no tolerance policy for
cheating. As per the University’s Honor Code:

“Cheating is the use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information, and study aids, as
well as unauthorized collaboration on examinations and other academic exercises. It is the
responsibility of students to consult with their professors concerning what constitutes
permissible collaboration. Cheating or helping others cheat is academic fraud.”

The accounting department has agreed that if a student is caught cheating, an “F” grade is assigned not
just for the exam or test in question, but for the entire class. Any students caught cheating will be reported
to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, and to the University Academic Honesty Committee.

In order to discourage unauthorized collaborations, the accounting department has agreed upon a set of
exam rules:
• You will be assigned a seat. Do NOT sit in your “regular” seat.

• If you are found looking at (or copying from) another student’s work, you will automatically fail
the exam and the entire class (at the instructors discretion).

• Phone usage is not permitted for any reason whatsoever. Please ensure that your ringer is off and
that your phone is stowed away in your bag. You CANNOT have a phone out at any point during
the exam. If you are found with a phone, you will automatically fail the exam and the entire class.

• Given that you are not permitted to use a phone, you must ensure that you bring your OWN
calculator. It should be a basic, non-programmable calculator. You will NOT be permitted to
share a calculator with someone else.

• Please do not use headphones and/or listen to music during the exam.

• You must not rely on any materials during the exam (this would include, but is not limited to, class
notes, “cheat sheets”, writing on your body (yes…..people do try that), information programmed
into a calculator etc. etc.).

• You CANNOT leave the room once the exam has started, even if you need to use the restroom.
As such, please ensure that you do not drink too much liquid before/during the exam and also
ensure that you use the restroom before the exam begins.

• If you are late for the exam, you will not be given any extra time. As such, please ensure that you
turn up early for the exam and that you are ready to begin the exam along with the rest of the class
at the designated start time.
