Tutorial 07: Dynamics and Vibration (UME 513)
MDOF
1. Find the mode shapes and natural frequency of the system shown in following figure, taking
k1= k2= k3=1 and m1= m2= m3=1.
2. Prove that the modes calculated in question 1 is orthogonal. Calculate the generalized mass
matrix and and generalized stiffness matrix. Calculate orthonormal modal matrix (Un) and
show that (UnT m Un) is and identity matrix.
3. A MDOF system of mass [m] and stiffness matrix [k] is subjected to a harmonic force F 0sin
(ωft) at second mass. Using the modal analysis process step by step and find the free vibration
response of the system. [m]=[3 0 0; 0 2 0; 0 0 1] [k] = [9 -3 0; -3 5 -2; 0 -2 2]
4. What is a rigid body mode, find modes of following system, taking k 1= k2= 1 and m1= m2=
m3=1.
