Let’s Elaborate

Resume
Resume is a document that summarizes the qualifications of an applicant to
a certain job opening. It is written to advertise the product which is the applicant
and to earn an interview for the job, so it must have strategic format and attention-
grabbing details. But always remember that a resume is not a log of job history, a
summary of skills, and a guarantee of getting the job automatically. This is usually
backed up by a cover letter to explain in detail the intent of the applicant for the
position and to highlight the qualifications that he/she possesses. A resume will
effectively highlight the qualifications that the applicant intends to advertise
depending on the format that he/she used.
What are the Different Parts of a Resume?
1. Header possesses the contact information of the applicant such as the e-
mail, mailing address, and mobile number.
2. Objective is the statement of intent of an applicant to be part of the company
he/she is applying for.
3. Personal information the basic information about the applicant that is
relevant to the job qualifications such as height, blood type, etc. (optional
depending on target job)
4. Educational background is the list of schools, courses, and awards garnered
where the applicant graduated.
5. Skills is the list of soft skills and hard skills that the applicant possesses
relevant to the target position. Hard skills are concrete, quantifiable and
transferrable skills such as public speaking, bookkeeping, database
management and software, etc. Soft skills are innate skills that are not
transferrable such as teamwork, integrity, patience, etc.
6. Seminars Attended and Professional Affiliations is the list of seminars,
workshops and professional club memberships related to the target position
7. Work experience is the list of previous jobs that the applicant has. This has to
be customized according to the desired position. Take note that job experience
5
is when you received salary and benefits from your previous company and job
exposure is just being exposed to it like on the job training, online selling, and
others.
8. Character Reference is the list of people who can prove the attitude towards
the job of the applicant.
What are the Different Formats of Resume?
1. Chronological resume is more traditional and more flexible format of
resume and is used by applicants with any level of experience. It is used
to highlight the list of the previous relevant jobs of the applicant and the
most related hard and soft skills are also written to complement the work
experience because chronological resume emphasizes career progression.
However, this also shows the gaps in the employment history of the
applicant and the frequency of changing career paths which are off to
hiring officers.
2. Functional resume accentuates the applicant’s qualifications unlike the
chronological resume that focuses on career progression. The focus of
functional resume is to convince the hiring officer to disregard the
applicant’s work history since there are gaps in it and focus more on the
skills and traits that make the applicant perfect for the target position.
This resume is good for those with rich level of experience and not
suitable for fresh graduates.
3. Combination resume joins parts of both chronological and functional
formats. It focuses on certain qualifications like the functional format
and contains professional experience like the chronological format. This
is used by applicants with rich experience in a particular industry.
How to Write a Resume?
1. Set the career goals. The resume must display the summary of the
goals and objectives of the applicant in his/her career to inform the
hiring officer of the things he/she aims to achieve in the field once
he/she is hired.
2. Write an accurate and functional professional summary. This must
display the experience of the applicant in the field and the skills that
he/she gained from it.
3. Highlight relevant work experience. The applicant must strategically
choose the format for his/her resume to highlight the most relevant
work experience to the target position. It will also help the hiring
6
officers to see the potential of the applicant as a candidate for the
position. One of the effective ways to write the work experience is to
tailor it to the job advertisement. Since companies openly state the
qualifications they require, applicants may highlight the skills and
experience that they have in their resumes to make it more visible to
the hiring officers.
4. Use a range of hard and soft skills in the resume. Some jobs would
require technical skills like computer programming, so it must be
included.
5. Include the certifications, awards, honors, and recognitions in the
resume for additional points. Some jobs would require a license or
may give more incentives to the licensed employee like teachers in
private schools; therefore, applicants include them.
6. Always remember that the goal of writing a resume is to gain the
interest of the hiring officer of considering the applicant as a potential
employee so, make it as unique and as functional as possible.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Seminars and professional affiliations included in a resume demonstrate ongoing professional development and engagement with industry standards and communities. They are most relevant when applying for positions within industries that value continuous learning and networking, such as education, healthcare, and technology. These elements can indicate the applicant’s dedication to staying informed and connected within their field, which can give them an edge in competitive job markets .

Including both hard and soft skills in a resume is important because it presents a comprehensive view of the applicant's abilities. Hard skills are concrete, measurable, and transferrable, such as bookkeeping and public speaking, which show technical proficiency. Soft skills, such as teamwork and integrity, are more about personal characteristics and interpersonal abilities. Employers value both types of skills because they indicate the applicant’s potential contributions to both the technical and cultural aspects of the workplace .

Accuracy in portraying information in a resume is necessary to maintain professionalism and integrity. Fabricating details can lead to immediate disqualification from the hiring process if discovered, as it reflects dishonesty and could jeopardize an individual’s reputation and future job prospects. Employers rely on resumes to assess candidates' suitability for a role, and inaccuracies can undermine trust and credibility .

Awards, recognitions, and certifications enhance a resume by providing evidence of the applicant's achievements and competencies, indicating a level of expertise and commitment to excellence. Including these elements can also distinguish the applicant from others by showcasing exceptional accomplishments. Jobs that require certifications, such as teaching or specialized technical roles, particularly benefit from these aspects since they confirm the applicant’s qualifications and add credibility to their skills .

A resume objective is a brief statement that outlines the applicant’s career goals and intent to join the company, helping the employer understand the candidate's aspirations and fit for the role. In contrast, a professional summary is a concise description of the applicant’s experience, skills, and achievements, providing a snapshot of their qualifications. While the objective focuses on future intentions, the summary highlights past accomplishments and competencies .

A resume acts as a strategic marketing tool by presenting the applicant’s skills, experiences, and achievements in a persuasive manner aimed at attracting the interest of hiring managers. By selecting the appropriate format, tailoring content to align with job descriptions, and including elements like certifications and recognitions, applicants effectively market themselves as solutions to an employer's needs. The resume must stand out, convey value, and entice employers to seek further engagement through an interview .

An employment gap in a resume is the period during which an applicant was unemployed after leaving their previous job. It can raise concerns for hiring managers as it might indicate a lack of stability or commitment. However, the impact varies depending on the context and how the applicant addresses it. Providing a solid explanation for the gap or using the time to develop relevant skills can mitigate potential negative impressions .

The potential drawbacks of a combination resume format include its complexity, which might overwhelm some hiring managers, and the risk of redundancy in presenting information. This format might not showcase the applicant's career progression clearly to those who prefer straightforward timelines. However, applicants with rich experience in a particular industry or those needing to highlight specific qualifications while also providing a detailed work history benefit from this format. It effectively merges elements of both chronological and functional resumes .

A chronological resume lists an applicant's work experience in reverse chronological order, emphasizing career progression. It is suitable for candidates with a steady career path and sufficient relevant experience. It highlights the applicant’s employment history but may reveal employment gaps. Meanwhile, a functional resume focuses on skills and qualifications relevant to the position, making it ideal for those with career gaps or diverse experiences. It emphasizes the applicant's capabilities rather than their work history .

Tailoring a resume to specific job advertisements enables applicants to highlight their skills and experiences that are most relevant to the job. This alignment makes it easier for hiring officers to see the candidate's suitability for the position, thus increasing the chances of being considered for an interview. Companies often list the qualifications they seek, so tailoring a resume can make these qualifications more visible and compelling .
