Maritime Learning's Impact on Cadet Competence

This study aims to investigate the influence of maritime learning activities on competency development among first class cadets at the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy for the 2023-2024 academic year. Maritime learning activities are important for developing skills needed in the maritime industry, but their effectiveness needs more clarity. A case study is proposed to provide insight into how these activities influence competency development, which can help improve curriculum and instruction. Previous research has found maritime education effective at developing skills and guiding students towards careers as professional seafarers. Facilities and resources that support learning are also important for improving maritime competencies.

"Investigating the Influence of Maritime Learning Activities on Student Competency

Development: A Case Study among 1 Class Cadets of PMMA Class 2024"

st

Maritime learning activities are crucial for every student, but their effectiveness in developing
competencies needs to be clarified. This lack of clarity hinders the educational experience and
equips students with the necessary skills for the maritime industry. A comprehensive case study
is needed to investigate the influence of these activities on competency development, enabling
informed decisions on curriculum enhancement and instructional strategies.

A maritime curriculum in educational institutions awakens students' insights, awareness, and

love for the sea that surrounds the Republic of Indonesia, an archipelago consisting of more
than 17 thousand large and small islands (International Journal of Education and Practice VOL.
2020). Especially for junior high school students, most Indonesians depend on sea and
maritime learning activities not only for their livelihood but also to develop their culture through
sea exploration and given proper discussion on the concept of lifelong learning where they can
internalize the value of competency development in a long term perspective for them to achieve
higher goals of being captains and chief engineers.

Research from the Student Development Practices of one Maritime Education Institution in the
Philippines (2017) it was mentioned that maritime students have observed a high level of
student development in maritime learning activities or practices first, in terms of the institution’s
policies toward human resource development systems and concern for innovations in the
methodology of teaching; followed by programs on personal effectiveness and development of
essential skills; and last, the initiatives for career guidance and counseling. The person-
environment theory of John Holland confirms the result of the study where the University brings
positive perspectives on how maritime students are being developed and guided towards
achieving their full potential to become future professional seafarers not only in the country but
also in the international community.

Education and training are organized programs provided to individuals or groups of workers to
enhance their knowledge and skills in performing specific tasks or jobs. According to Dong
(2014), Maritime Education and Training (MET) is an educational system that aims to produce
competent seafarers for merchant vessels. Malek and Mokhtar (year not specified) define MET
as a means of ensuring a competent and knowledgeable workforce.

This method will assist students in attaining their professional objectives (Curry, 2019).
Developing student competencies like a love for marine life, encouraging high interest and
concern, making work decisions, and developing active attitudes and creative entrepreneurship
in the maritime sector must be prioritized in maritime education (Hidayati et al., 2020). ...

Their investment in their learning facilities and resources suggests that there is a solid system in
place to encourage learning. The research of Hidayati (2020) reveals that the aspects
connected to curriculum design, training, and education have the most value when signs of
facility support are present. Learning resources, such as equipment and facilities, are important
for improving maritime-related competencies through education and training.

This study, Maritime Learning Activities aims to provide a well-rounded education in the
Philippine Merchant Marine Academy, focusing on the first-class cadets of the institution that
equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for successful
careers in the maritime sector for the Academic Year 2023-2024.

The concept of lifelong learning aligns with Maritime Education and Training (MET) objectives by promoting continuous personal and professional development beyond formal education. MET programs emphasize the acquisition of a broad range of competencies that serve as a foundation for ongoing skill improvement and adaptation to industry changes. This approach encourages students to view education as a lifelong process, crucial for achieving advanced career goals like becoming captains or chief engineers .

Maritime learning activities at the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) significantly impact cadet competency development by enhancing their professional skills and knowledge, which are crucial for successful maritime careers. These activities include a focus on human resource development, innovative teaching methodologies, and personal effectiveness programs, all of which contribute to the high level of student development observed among cadets . The curriculum design, educational resources, and facilities support play critical roles in effectively imparting these competencies .

Curriculum design and facility support are crucial for the effectiveness of Maritime Education and Training (MET). A well-structured curriculum ensures that the necessary competencies, such as marine life passion and operational skills, are emphasized and taught effectively. Facility support, including access to modern equipment and resources, further enhances learning by providing practical experiences that are essential for understanding maritime operations .

Key factors that determine the success of maritime learning activities include curriculum design, teaching methodologies, facility support, and human resource development systems. Effective curriculum design ensures relevant competencies are taught, while innovative teaching methodologies facilitate efficient learning processes. Adequate facility support, providing the necessary learning resources, enriches the educational experience. Finally, human resource development systems help in nurturing the personal and professional growth of students, ultimately leading to effective competency development .

Integrating sea exploration into the curriculum can enhance junior high students' understanding of maritime culture by offering hands-on experiences that connect theoretical knowledge with real-world maritime environments. This approach not only fosters a deeper appreciation and love for the sea but also helps students internalize the importance of maritime activities to their culture and livelihood, laying the foundation for a lifelong learning perspective and potential maritime careers .

Human resource development systems impact the educational outcomes of maritime students by structuring the teaching and learning processes to focus on essential competencies. These systems incorporate policies and practices that foster innovation in teaching methodologies and offer programs for personal and professional effectiveness. As a result, students develop the necessary skills and knowledge required for a successful maritime career, demonstrating higher levels of competency and career readiness .

Personal effectiveness programs within maritime institutions contribute to competency development by equipping cadets with soft skills such as leadership, communication, and decision-making. These programs complement technical maritime training, offering a holistic educational experience that enhances cadets' capability to handle real-world challenges effectively, thereby increasing their overall competency in professional maritime environments .

There is a direct relationship between maritime institutions' investment in learning resources and student competency outcomes. Investments in modern equipment and facilities provide students with essential tools and environments necessary for experiential learning, which is critical for mastering maritime skills. High-quality resources lead to better educational experiences and outcomes, ensuring students develop the competencies required for successful careers at sea .

Maritime education can influence cultural development among students in Indonesia by fostering a connection with their maritime heritage and promoting awareness of the sea's significance in Indonesian culture. Through maritime learning activities, students develop a love and respect for marine life, which integrates cultural values into their education. This not only preserves but also revitalizes maritime cultural practices, enabling students to contribute to their community's cultural and economic development .

Educational policies in maritime institutions influence cadets' career readiness by shaping the learning environment and setting the standards for instructional quality. Policies that prioritize human resource development and innovative teaching methods help cadets develop essential skills and adaptability needed in the maritime industry.
