NAVIGATION IN HEAVY WEATHER OR IN TROPICAL STORM – BRIDGE CHECK LIST (13)

Please tick off after following checks have made:

1. Inform Master & Dept. Heads in advance about expected time & duration of bad weather.
2. CH. OFFICER to supervise the following items and confirm to bridge when completed:
a All loose & movable objects in accomm / dk stores / mast houses stores are secured.
b All deck cargo checked, tightened as required.
c Spurling pipe steel-covers have checked in position, cemented over and covered.
d All steel WT doors/booby hatches/hold access hatch-doors on/under-deck chkd & tightened.
e Anchors have been stowed right up into hawse-pipe with no free movement and securing tightened. Keep
windlass gears and cable stoppers correctly set & locked. Extra lashing to be taken.
f All closable vents on dk, cargo hatches / holds, foc’sle, poop and around superstructure has been
checked and tight. Special attention to bunker tk vents and sndg pipes.
g In consultation with Master, draft, trim, GM has been adjusted for better handling of vessel.
h The chain locker doors have been secured and checked.
i All educator valves / overboard discharge valves forward have been opened and checked. ( Forepeak
dewatering system from remote tried out prior entering rough weather )
j All mooring ropes and wires on the mooring winches have secured and covered.
k All hatch-covers have been checked and tightened as necessary.
l All gangways have been secured, and gangway motors covered with canvas.
m Lifeboats have been secured. Lifeboat equipment checked for lashings.
n Provision / stores cranes, Mono rail cranes system, have been checked secured.
o Cargo handling cranes, derricks, grabs, equipment has all been checked secured.
p Special attention has been paid to securing paint, lubricant and chemical stores.
q All equipment, crockery, cutlery, tables, chairs, etc., secured in the mess /pantry /stores.
3. CH. ENGR to confirm to bridge when Engine Room and engine stores are secured
4 Inform Ch. Eng that reduction in speed may be required, depending on severity of weather encountered.
on UMS ship, Engine room to be manned and ready for maneuvering.
5 Prepare to strengthen navigational watch. Inform Master.
6 D/O to receive radio weather reports for area at every 3 hour intervals.
7 Meteorological instruments, Weather fax (analysis / prognosis), Weather reports, EGC messages to be
monitored & compared with weather actually being experienced.
8 Hourly log-entries of meteorological conditions prevailing and vessel’s behavior made.
9 Radio message, if necessary, to be transmitted as per SOLAS Ch. V, Regulation 2 (a)
10 Frequency of weather reporting to be increased (every 3rd hr )- If participating
11 Any given time if vessel’s behavior is causing OOW concern or if in doubt as to severity of the weather,
Master to be immediately called.
12 After consultation with the Master, course and speed has been adjusted or avoiding action taken, as the
case may be, to ease the stress of weather on the vessel.
13 Cook has been advised and rigged galley and cold rooms for rough weather.
14 Safety lines been rigged on deck as required.
15 All personnel have been specifically instructed not to go out on deck without Master's orders.
16 Slack ballast tanks have been pressed-up / pumped out, Free surface effect in tanks. Ballast hold must be
ballasted on commencement of voyage or in ample time prior onset of heavy weather.
17 Cargo Hold water Ingress system is operational
NOTE 1: On larger bulkers, it is important to note that weather related damage may occur without the vessel actually showing
appreciable movement, especially with heavy weather from ahead.
NOTE 2: When it is considered necessary to send a party on deck to inspect lashings, vents, hatches, etc., Master’s express permission
must be obtained and the entire operation is to be supervised by him. Course and speed to be adjusted so as to give the maximum
protection to the deck party during the operation.
FIRST PRIORITY is "Safety" NOT the "Schedule”. Do Not hesitate to deviate from the original course line to avoid rough
seas. ( The Master however should report any such decision to the BRSML without delay )
