Goals Setting

 Goals Setting is the process of establishing a goal (outcome) to serve as the aim of a
person actions.
 Goals setting help us to be successful in our lives.
 What is the benefit of goals setting?
o The process of setting goals allows students to choose where they want to go in
the university and what they want to achieve. By knowing what they want to
achieve, they know what they have to concentrate on and improve. Goals
setting gives students long-term vision and short-term motivation.
o By setting goals students can:
1. increase their motivation to achieve.
2. improve their academic performance.
3. increase pride and satisfaction in performance which will make them
happy and enjoy their studies.
4. improve their self-confidence : By setting goals and measuring their
achievements, students are able to see what they have done and what
they are capable of. Seeing their results gives the confidence and
assurance that they need to believe they can achieve higher goals.
 SMART goals setting:
o SMART goals are:
 S = Specific & Clear: What exactly should be accomplished?
 M = Measurable : How will me measure this? Include time, dates,
targets
 A = Attainable/ Achievable : Is it feasible? Do we have control over it?
The right amount of challenge based on student’s skills level
 R = Relevant: Is this goal relevant to my life?
 T = Time-Bound and Track-able : What is the realistic time frame?
 Long-Term goal: for students can be something they want to
accomplish for the entire study year/program or can be
targeting a career (see attached reference: Ten typical jobs
graduates can do in IT).
 Short-Term goal may be something they want to accomplish on
a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
 Learning how to frame goals as SMART goals and being willing to adjust them to get
SMARTer is an important skill that would help every student get off to a better start and
have a better study year, this year and into the future.
 Examples of long-term Objectives:
o I want to graduate and gain my BSc degree in Computer science in four years .
o Better: I want to graduate and gain my BSc degree in Computer science in four
years with grade C in all courses.

1
o I want to work as a software engineer after my graduation
 Examples of short-term objectives:
o I want to get at least C in my CS course.
o Can be better: I want to get at least 70% in my CS tests and at least 80% in my
quizzes and assignments.
 Developing an action plan: the next step after setting the goals is to develop an action
plan that makes the goal more achievable. Define a realistic plan to not only include a
set timeline and end date, but also “mini” goals to reach along the way. Students need
to ask themselves, “What do I have to do in order to reach my goal?”. A monthly plan
works well with students, as they then have a weekly check in to reflect on their
progress.
o Example (1) :
 The goal is “I want to score at least 70% on the next CS test” as one goal
for the month.
 Action Plan: What are things the student can do to achieve this goal?
Perhaps:
 completing all my homework,
 asking the teacher for extra help,
 studying 3 hours a week,
 studying each day for 1 hour during the week of the test
 These are the mini-goals that can be seen as step-by-step progression.
o Example (2) :
 The goal is “I want to score at least 80% on the next CS test” as one goal
for the month.
 Action Plan: What are things the student can do to achieve this goal?
Perhaps:
 completing all my homework,
 asking the teacher for extra help,
 studying every day in the week for one hour,
 studying each day for 2 hours during the week of the test
 These are the mini-goals that can be seen as step-by-step progression.

Requesting help from a teacher is pivotal in clarifying doubts, strengthening understanding, and providing additional resources or perspectives that aid in a student's learning process. This support can make difficult content accessible and enhance comprehension, which is crucial for successfully meeting academic goals. Additionally, teacher guidance can help students identify effective strategies and refine action plans for improved outcomes .

Developing an action plan is crucial as it provides a realistic blueprint that includes a timeline, due dates, and 'mini' goals to ensure the main goal is achievable. This plan serves as a step-by-step guide that helps students stay organized and motivated, breaking down the larger goal into manageable tasks, and enabling regular progress checks. Such planning enhances the likelihood of success by keeping activities focused and aligned with achieving the set objectives .

Students can measure progress by setting mini-goals that align with their desired test score, such as completing all homework, seeking additional help, and dedicating specific hours to study. Tracking daily or weekly study time and performance on quizzes and assignments provides immediate feedback and allows students to adjust study methods as needed. Regular reflection on practice test scores compared to target scores further aids in assessing progress and making necessary adjustments to meet their academic goals .

Short-term goals function as incremental steps that support the accomplishment of long-term goals. They offer immediate targets that align with the larger objectives, helping to maintain focus and motivation over time. By achieving short-term goals, students build momentum, gain periodic satisfaction and motivation, and reduce the perceived enormity of long-term goals into manageable tasks, thereby increasing the chances of long-term success through sustained effort and progress tracking .

Goal setting allows students to choose their desired outcomes in university and identify areas for concentration and improvement. It provides a long-term vision and short-term motivation that help increase motivation to achieve, improve academic performance, boost pride and satisfaction in achievements, and enhance self-confidence by measuring success and assessing capabilities .

SMART goal setting enhances self-confidence as it provides tangible evidence of progress and achievements. By setting specific and measurable goals, students can track their advancements and realize their competence, which assures them of their abilities. Achieving defined milestones boosts self-esteem and cultivates a belief in their capacity to achieve even higher goals, reinforcing their confidence and motivation for ongoing self-improvement .

Setting a realistic timeframe is essential as it anchors the goal within a feasible period, allowing students to plan and allocate resources effectively. It provides a structure that motivates consistent effort and progress checks. Unrealistic timeframes can lead to stress, missed objectives, and diminished motivation, whereas achievable deadlines encourage persistence and focus, fostering a balanced approach to achieving significant yet attainable milestones .

Setting specific and clear goals significantly clarifies expectations and the path of action, enabling precise planning and prioritization. Specific goals provide measurable criteria for success, allowing students to track progress and identify areas needing improvement. In contrast, vague goals lack focus, leading to inefficiencies and potential frustration. Clear goals help maintain direction, ensure resource allocation is purposeful, and create a sense of accountability, enhancing overall academic success by fostering structured effort and better time management .

Students may face challenges such as loss of interest, unforeseen obstacles, or slow progress in long-term goals. To maintain motivation, they can set short-term milestones that provide immediate gratification, and regularly review and adjust their goals to stay relevant and challenging. Establishing a support system for accountability and celebrating small achievements can also mitigate demotivation. These strategies promote sustained engagement and contribute to achieving the overarching long-term objectives .

The SMART framework helps by ensuring that goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. This clarity enables students to clearly define what they want to achieve, create measurable benchmarks to gauge progress, ensure their goals are achievable and within their control while challenging, align goals with personal relevance, and set realistic timeframes for accountability. This structured approach enhances focus, motivation, and the effectiveness of achieving desired outcomes .
