Science 5-Q4-SLM3

The agents of weathering that break down rocks and form soil include: 1) Water, which causes physical weathering through freeze-thaw and abrasion as it flows against rocks. 2) Wind, which intensifies the effects of water and can carry objects to damage rocks through weathering. 3) The sun, whose temperature changes cause rocks to expand and contract, creating cracks over time through weathering processes like exfoliation. 4) Animals and plants also contribute to weathering as animal activities break rocks and plant roots grow into cracks and exert pressure that weakens rocks over many years.

Self-Learning Module 3
The Agents of Weathering
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 5 Self-Learning Module 3 on The Agents of

Weathering!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Science 6 Self-Learning Module 3 on The Agents of

Weathering!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectations - This points to the set of knowledge and skills

that you will learn after completing the module.

Pretest - This measures your prior knowledge about the lesson

at hand.

Recap - This part of the module provides a review of concepts

and skills that you already know about a previous lesson.

Lesson - This section discusses the topic in the module.

Activities - This is a set of activities that you need to perform.

Wrap Up - This section summarizes the concepts and

application of the lesson.

Valuing - This part integrates a desirable moral value in the

lesson.

Posttest–This measure how much you have learned from the

entire module.
EXPECTATIONS

After going through this self-learning module, it is expected that you will be
able to:
1. identify the agents of weathering (e.g. water, wind, people, animals,
plants, sun);
2. illustrate how the agents of weathering affects the breaking down
of rocks; and
3. suggest human activities that help in the production of soil.

PRETEST

Directions: Identify the agent of weathering that is involved in the following

situations. Choose your answer from the box below and write it on the blank.

water wind people

animals plants sun

_______________1. Miners dig the Rocky Mountains of Benguet to look for

precious stones deposited beneath.

_______________2. The trees that are growing in the forest grind the boulders

by their roots.

_______________3. Most of the sedimentary rock formation along the sea were

carved by the waves.

_______________4. Rocks can sometimes break down if blown away by strong

winds.

_______________5. This factor causes the change in temperature in a

particular place.

LESSON

You have learned from the two previous lessons what is about
weathering, its different types and how it occurs. It was also partly mentioned
what are the causes of this phenomenon to happen. In this module, you are
going to learn more what are the factors that affect and contribute to the
breaking down rocks and formation of soil.

The Agents of Weathering

1. Water
The force of the flowing water
can break the rocks into particles as
it collides with the other rocks. It can
also carve the sides of the rocks where
it flows creating a lines and other
formations that are common in the
sedimentary rocks of the rivers and
seas. The breaking of rocks where
water is involved are freeze-thaw and
abrasion which are both from physical weathering.
2. Wind
Just like water, wind is also a
natural force that can break rocks. It
may intensify the movement of the
water resulting to a strong collision
between rocks. Wind may not directly
break a rock but it could use some
tangible objects to cause damage to the
rocks that may lead to weathering.

3. Sun
It is the reason for having a
change in temperature. Changing
temperature from high to low or vice
versa affects the strength of the rock.
Rocks that are exposed to so much heat
receive pressure that could create a
crack on its surface. Sometimes, rocks
become brittle that could easily be
broken by the natural forces. The best
example for this factor is rock
exfoliation.

4. Animals
Animal activities could also affect the
weathering process of a rock. Some animals may
dig holes from the surface of the soil to make
their shelter and protect them from predators. As
a result, rock is exposed another or different
factors of weathering. Large animals are usually
heavy and their weight could also break rocks
depending on the force they have exerted when
they step into small rocks.

5. Plants
Plants usually grow in the soil
that supports life on earth. Other
plants may grow big like trees where
their roots could penetrate deep into
the soil. Other plants grow on top of
rocks. As they grow, their roots enter
the holes and cracks of the rock to sip water and nutrients. When the
roots grow bigger, it exerts pressure to the rock. As a result, the rock is
slowly breaking. Due to repeated process, soil is formed.

6. People
There are several human
activities that could contribute to
the weathering process such as
mining, building houses, roads and
bridges and other related activities
to construction. Due to the rising of
population, housing developers had
converted mountains into
subdivisions and built
infrastructures that could cater the needs of people. Human beings are
the greatest contributor of the weathering process.
