Minimum Beam Width Calculation Guide

The document provides the solution to determine the minimum width required for a cast-in-place beam reinforced with 4 #6 bars and #2 stirrups. It states that as per ACI 318-77, the minimum cover is 1.5 inches and minimum clear distance between bars is 1 inch or the bar diameter. It calculates that with 4 #6 bars, 2 covers of 1.5 inches each, 2 stirrup diameters of 0.5 inches, and 3 clear distances of 1 inch each, the minimum beam width is 9.5 inches.

PROBLEM 18 – 0533: Determine the minimum width required for a cast-in-place

beam reinforced with 4 – #6 bars and #2 stirrup.

Solution: As per ACI 318–77 sec. 7.7.1, the minimum cover for an interior
cast-in-place beam shall be 1(1/2)".
Also, from sec. 7.6.1 of ACI 318–77, the minimum clear distance between
parallel bars in a layer shall not be less than 1" or db, the bar diameter.
We have db, the bar diameter for a #6 bar equal to 6/8".
Thus, let us provide 1" clear distance.
Hence, the minimum beam width is the sum of the following:
Two covers = 2 × 1(1/2)" = 3.00"
Two stirrup diameters (#2) = 2 × 2/8 = 0.50"
Four #6 bar diameters = 4 × 6/8 = 3.00"
Three clear distances =3 × 1"= 3.00"
Thus, minimum beam width = 3.00" + 0.50" + 3.00" + 3.00"
= 9.50".
