To determine if a set of vectors forms a basis for R3, the vectors must be linearly independent and span R3. This requires three vectors, each with three components (since R3 has dimension 3), and the vectors should form a linearly independent set. This can be verified by setting up a matrix with the vectors as its rows and performing row reduction to echelon form. If the resulting row echelon form of the matrix has three pivot positions (or leading ones), the vectors are linearly independent and span R3, thus forming a basis .

Choosing proper values for k in vector span or linear independence problems determines whether sets of vectors maintain linear independence or become bases for specific spaces. Appropriate values of k correspond to pivotal conditions in matrices derived from these vectors. For instance, such values ensure pivots or leading ones appear in row-echelon forms of matrices, crucial for verifying independence or bases for spanning Rn .

The rank-nullity theorem states that for a matrix A, the sum of its rank (the dimension of its row space) and its nullity (the dimension of its null space) equals the number of columns in A. To apply this theorem, first determine the rank of A by identifying the number of non-zero rows in its row echelon form. Then, the nullity can be found as the difference between the number of columns and the rank. These calculated values should satisfy the rank-nullity theorem: rank(A) + nullity(A) = number of columns in A .

The vectors w2 + w3, w1 + w3, and w1 + w2 retain linear independence due to the distinct derivations from the original set of independent vectors w1, w2, and w3. Their independence holds as there's no linear combination of these vectors resulting in the zero vector, besides the trivial solution, unless the sum zeroes out entire rows—a condition unattainable by the linear constructions here, preserving independence .

For the system kx + y = 1, x + ky = 1, the determinant of the coefficient matrix must not be zero for a unique solution to exist. The determinant is k^2 - 1. If k = 1 or k = -1, the determinant is zero, and thus no unique solution exists: for k = 1, the system has infinitely many solutions; for k = -1, the system has no solutions. Otherwise, for other values of k, the system has exactly one solution .

The Gauss-Jordan elimination method to find the inverse of a matrix involves augmenting the matrix with the identity matrix of the same size on its right, forming an augmented matrix. Through a series of row operations, this augmented matrix is transformed until the original matrix (on the left side) is converted into the identity matrix. If this is successfully achieved, the right portion of the augmented matrix, which now resembles the identity matrix, represents the inverse of the original matrix. If the row operations can fully transform the original matrix into the identity matrix, the matrix is invertible; otherwise, it is not .

To determine if the vectors (2, -7, 1, 11) and (4, 3, 0, 3) belong to the span of vectors u = (1, -2, 1, 3), v = (1, 2, -1, 1), w = (2, 3, 1, -1), set up a system of linear equations where each target vector is expressed as a linear combination of u, v, and w. This involves writing the target vectors as a combination of the given vectors and solving the resulting system using methods such as Gaussian elimination. If a solution exists, the vectors are in the span; otherwise, they are not .

Linearly independent vectors can become dependent when a vector within the linear combination of independent vectors is expressed as a linear combination of other vectors in the set. For example, given linearly independent vectors w1, w2, and w3, the expressions for the differences like w2 - w3, w1 - w3, and w1 - w2 can become linearly dependent because these differences can sum to zero, indicating dependence, despite each being a linear combination of the original independent vectors .

The product AB - BA of two symmetric matrices A and B is skew-symmetric if A and B are symmetric matrices. This is because the transpose of AB is equal to BA in symmetric matrices, leading to the equation (AB - BA)^T = - (AB - BA). Therefore, the subtraction of these products results in a skew-symmetric matrix.

To determine the linear independence of a set of vectors, construct a matrix where each vector is a column. Calculate the rank of this matrix by transforming it to its row echelon form. If the rank equals the number of vectors (columns), the vectors are linearly independent; otherwise, if the rank is less, they are dependent. This is because a full rank indicates no linear combination of the vectors can result in the zero vector, except the trivial combination where all coefficients are zero .
