Study Habits Impact on Student Performance

Chapter 3 outlines the research methodology for a study examining the effect of students' study habits on their academic performance, utilizing a descriptive correlational research design. The study will involve 50 randomly selected Grade 11 students from Colegio de San Francisco Javier Inc., with data collected through a researcher-developed questionnaire. Ethical considerations include confidentiality, voluntary participation, and the right to withdraw from the study.

Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
In this chapter, the way by which the study is undertaken is to discuss.

Specifically, it presents the research design, the research respondents, the research

environment, the research instrument, data-gathering procedure and statistical treatment

of data.

Research Design

A descriptive correlational research design was used for this study is examining the

effect of students' study habits in their performance in their academics. It is descriptive

in a way that describes the level of study habits and what are their study habits. And

also, it is correlational because the researchers will correlate the study habits and the

academic performance of the students.

Research Environment

This study will be conducted at the Colegio de San Francisco Javier Inc., located at

Burgos St. Palompon, Leyte, particularly in the Grade 11 Senior High School students.

The said school offers Pre-Elem School, Elementary, High School and Senior High

school. Colegio de San Francisco Javier Inc. has complete facilities in terms of school

services, like Computer Laboratory that uses E-Learning which is Genyo, Science

Laboratory, Library, Canteen, and Faculty Office. In every grade level, it is divided into

three classroom section buildings. This school in the latter part has a two-story building.

The population of the respondents is divided into three according to their respective

sections, here are the following; Grade 11- Accountancy and Business Management
(ABM) is composed of 25 students, Grade 11- General Academic (GA) is composed of

15 students and Grade 11- Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) is composed of 22

students. The overall population of the grade 11 students is composed of 60.

Research Respondents

The respondents of this study will be the randomly selected Grade 11 Senior High

School students of Colegio de San Francisco Javier Inc. This study includes 50 students

as the respondents of this study. More specifically, these 50 student respondents are

divided into 25 girls and 25 boys. The respondents were senior high school students in

the school year 2019-2020 from the different strands of Colegio De San Francisco

Javier Inc. The study habits of the respondents were assessed by administering the

"Survey on The Effect of Study Habits towards the academic performance of the

students" developed by the researchers during their final year in Colegio De San

Francisco Javier Inc. The performance rating of the grade 11 students was generated

from the data released by the researchers. It is the overall rating obtained by the

respondents in the survey that they were taking.

Research Instruments

The researcher will prepare a questionnaire to determine the effect of study habits

on the academic performance of the students. This can be determined such as the

respondents' strategies in coping with their studies if it is good or bad ways that will

result in a negative and positive view. The primary instrument that will be used in

conducting the study is the questionnaires. The researchers themselves made the

questionnaires. The questionnaires include; what are the different strategies or study

habits that the students usually do when studying and to make out their studies. The
questionnaire is composed of ten items. Items 1-10 are all about how they do their study

habits, stated there- the examples on how to study and overall it all tackles about study

habits.

Data- Gathering Procedure

To get the necessary information for this study, the researcher will send a letter

request to the senior high school coordinator at the school. If permission granted, the

researchers will give an overview of why they are participating in the study and the

overall purpose of the study. Likewise, they will be informed that the information they

provide will remain confidential and that proper procedures will be taken into

consideration to make sure the students are treated humanely. Next will be the

administration or we will distribute the questionnaires to them. Furthermore, the

researchers will give brief instructions as to how they should answer the said

questionnaire given to them. After the respondents answer those questions, will be the

data collection, the researchers will properly collect all the questionnaires used by the

respondents. And lastly, after the data has been obtained, will be the data analysis, the

researchers will read and analyze the given answer to get the result of the study.

Statistical Treatment of Data

To fully understand the importance of this study, before analyzing the data that will

be gathered, it will be coded using the spreadsheet program. The research will then use

the following statistical tools using statistical software as a device for computation:

1. Mean and standard deviation will be used to determine the level of study habits

of the students and their academic performance.

2. Pearson's correlation coefficient will be used to test the measure of the

relationship between the study habits and students’ academic performance.

Ethical Consideration

The information that will be provided by the respondents will be treated with

confidentiality. This will protect their privacy and identity.

There will be no monetary cost from the respondents. All they will give is their

truthful answers to the questions. They have also the right to reject is he/she don't want

to be a part of this research.

The respondents' ratings will be confined and they will have remained anonymous.
