Introduction

Insurance companies fulfill a critical function in contemporary society through the provision of

financial protection to organizations, businesses, and individuals in opposition to unanticipated

losses and risks. Financial institutions that provide insurance policies to enterprises, individuals,

and other entities are called insurance companies. In return for periodic premium payments,

these policies transfer the financial risk of potential losses from the policyholder to the insurance

company. A wide array of insurance companies exists, encompassing property and casualty

insurance, auto insurance, life insurance, and numerous others.

Terms and Definitions

Insurance - Protection against possible financial loss.

Insurance Company - A risk-sharing firm that assumes financial responsibility for losses that

may result from an insured risk.

Insurer - An insurance company.

Policy - A written contract for insurance.

Premium - The amount of money a policyholder is charged for an insurance policy.

Insured - A person covered by an insurance policy.

Policyholder - A person who owns an insurance policy.


Coverage - is the amount of risk or liability covered for an individual or entity by way of

insurance services.

Perils - The cause of the possible loss.

Types of Insurance

1. Life Insurance - Life insurance is a financial contract that provides financial protection

to your loved ones in the event of your death. It is a way to ensure that your family and

dependents are taken care of financially when you are no longer there to provide for

them.

There are two main kinds of life assurance that serve very different purposes.

● Term Assurance - provides coverage for a specific period, typically 10, 20, or 30

years.

● Whole of Life Assurance - provides coverage for your entire life.

2. Health Insurance - a type of insurance that helps cover the cost of medical expenses. It

provides financial protection against the high costs of healthcare services, such as doctor

visits, hospital stays, medications, and surgeries.

3. Education Insurance - The purpose of education insurance is to provide financial

support and ensure that funds are available when it comes time for the insured individual

or their children to pursue higher education. It offers a systematic approach to saving for

education by providing a structured savings plan.


4. Automotive Insurance - also known as car insurance or auto insurance, is a type of

insurance coverage that provides financial protection against losses or damages related to

vehicles.

5. Travel Insurance - type of insurance coverage that provides financial protection and

assistance for unexpected events that can occur during a trip.

6. Property Insurance - Property insurance is a type of insurance that protects your

property from damage or loss caused by certain perils, such as fire, theft, and some

weather damage.

● Homeowners insurance - This type of insurance protects your home and its

contents from damage caused by fire, theft, vandalism, and other perils.

● Flood insurance - This type of insurance protects your home from damage

caused by flooding.

● Commercial property insurance - This type of insurance protects businesses

from damage to their property, such as their buildings, equipment, and inventory.

type of insurance product that provides a regular income stream during retirement. It is

designed to help individuals or couples ensure they have a stable and consistent income

after they stop working.
