Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

As cells are the building blocks of life, learning materials are the building blocks

teachers [Link] schools, especially those who come from third-world countries, struggle to

provide adequate learning materials for their students, which seems to hinder their academic

performance and overall learning experience. As someone who’s seen the education system

marginally improve over time, I can safely say that I have some knowledge when it comes to

good and bad learning materials and how it affects the students’ experiences not only in

learning but in other aspects as well. I’ve seen schools with insufficient learning materials

and schools with adequate learning materials and it is safe to say that there is a huge

difference with their students’ education. It is always important to keep in mind the quality of

the learning materials before providing them as this plays a big role when it comes to the

education of the future generation. Although the adequate learning materials aren’t the only

ones that contribute to education, but also the teachers and the cooperation of the students.

Third-world countries, the Philippines for example, always had a problem with

providing their schools with good, proper, adequate learning materials in which case they are

left with “below average” learning equipment which possibly affects the academic

performance of students negatively. This not only affects the students but also the teachers

and facilitators who have to work around the problem and create unefficient solutions to their

problems. Bad learning equipment leads to bad teaching experience leads to bad learning

experience. Instead of equipment that meet our expectations and standards, we see materials

that jump too high, steep too low, or just plain inaccurate or objectionable (Salceda, 2021).

We always see textbooks that lack information which transfers to the students’ retention.

1
Despite the problematic equipment we have been provided, the Philippines’ learning

materials have improved over the past few years. We are seeing modernization through the

use of TVs, computers, and phones inside classrooms which help towards the textbooks and

such that lack information. With this technology, it allows not only the teachers but also the

students to dig deeper themselves about topics that the books may have missed.

All in all, this research was conducted to showcase the status of learning materials

across schools and their impacts on students, which other articles don’t seem to tackle. The

learning materials of a school serves as one of the most important pillars when it comes to

education. Without it, the teachers will have a hard time teaching as they have nothing but

their general knowledge to base off of. That is why the modernization of learning materials is

highly recommended to those countries who are available in doing so. Not only does it

benefit the people but it also benefits the future of their country and those who will lead it.

Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to look further into the impacts of adequate learning

materials to the Junior High School students of Holy Nazarene Christian School. Moreover,

this study’s goal is to answer the following questions:

1. What learning materials are seen used in Holy Nazarene Christian School? Are

they adequate?

2. How do the adequate learning materials impact the Junior High School students

academically?

3. Does the quality of learning materials matter when it comes to education? Why or

why not?

Scope and Delimitation

This study fixates on adequate learning materials and finding out the impacts it

provides on Junior High School students academically. Gathering of data will be conducted

2
on 24 Junior High School students out of the 208 total population of students enrolled in this

school year 2023-2024 of Holy Nazarene Christian School. This study only covers the

impacts of adequate learning materials on Junior High School students academically, how

important adequacy is to the education system, and what they can improve upon when it

comes to the learning materials we are provided.

This study will not cover the usage of adequate learning materials of educators on the

students. Furthermore, input from students who are not in the Junior High School level will

not be included. This study will be conducted through the use of an interview as a reference.

Significance of the Study

This topic was researched upon to provide imporant information when it comes to the

impacts of adequate learning materials to Junior High School students regarding their

academic performance. This study expects to benefit the following sectors:

Students. This study aims to provide awareness towards the Junior High School

students on the learning materials they are given at school. This can help them find ways to

adapt around their learning materials in the case that their learning materials are “inadequate”

or “insufficient”.

Teachers. Using this study, the teachers can gain information about their learning

materials and how they would use them to teach their students. It can also help them be able

to aid the students whenever they seem to struggle due to their learning materials.

Administrators. The findings of this study can help the administrators monitor the

impacts of adequate learning materials to their students. In addition, it can help them monitor

their learning materials, like what information it contains, where it came from, and if it is

sufficient enough for the educators and students to utilize. This can serve as a reference for

their learning materials if they would ever want to change their provider of learning

materials.

3
Manufacturers. Through this study, manufacturers of learning materials can

determine what improvements can be made on their products and what their products are

missing. This allows them to update their learning materials if it is missing information or if

it is not ergonomic to not only the students but also the teachers.

Future Researchers. The findings of this study will be benefical towards the future

researchers who will look further into this topic if there are any new problems. This study can

server as a guide and a reference and will provide them with easy to understand knowledge

about the topic in hand.

Common questions
