The Philippines as a country with a unique geographical location has been subject to a
lot of catastrophes and calamities brought by the changing patterns in climate. Among these
are typhoon Ondoy which hit Metro Manila in September 2009, category 5 super typhoon
Pablo which hit Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley, super typhoon Yolanda which greatly
damaged Tacloban City in November 2013 and typhoon Odette on December 17, 2021 which
left numerous homeless victims in some parts of Visayas and Mindanao. Recently, the
Northeast Monsoon and the trough of the Low-Pressure Area brought continued heavy rains
that resulted in landslides and massive flooding in Davao and CARAGA Region. As of 06
February, NDRRMC reported for validation of 18 dead and 11 missing persons. Almost 1.1
million persons were affected while 354,000 are currently displaced. These are the same areas
that were affected by heavy rains due to the shearline in early January 2024. Moreover, a
landslide in Masara, Municipality of Maco, Davao De Oro occurred last February 6, 2024. The
landslide buried a bus terminal for employees of a gold mining firm and 55 nearby houses
leaving 32 other people injured. Rocks, mud, and trees slid more than 700 meters (2,300 feet)
down a steep mountainside near the Apex Mining Co. concession, burying an 8.9-hectare
section of the Masara community. As of 11 February, the death toll from a massive landslide
near a gold mine abruptly rose to 54.
In this regard, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC)
and the Climate Change Commission embark on a project to inform people about the
importance of adapting to the adverse effects of climate change. The information campaign
seeks to educate people on the importance of adaptation measures in order to lessen (if not
eradicate) the damage and casualties brought by the changing climate patterns.
