Profile of National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC)

NTPC Limited, formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation, is an Indian central
public sector undertaking, under the ownership of the Ministry of Power and the Government
of India, who is engaged in the generation of electricity and other activities. The headquarters
of the PSU are situated at New Delhi. NTPC's core function is the generation and distribution of
electricity to State Electricity Boards in India. The body also undertakes consultancy and turnkey
project contracts that involve engineering, project management, construction management,
and operation and management of power plants.

It was founded by Government of India in 1975, which now holds 51.1% of its equity shares
after divestment of its stake in 2004, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017. In May 2010, NTPC was
conferred Maharatna status by the Union Government of India, one of only four companies to
be awarded this status.[7] It is ranked 400th in the Forbes Global 2000 for 2016.

NTPC currently operates 55 power stations: 24 coal, seven combined cycle gas and liquid fuel,
two hydro powered, one wind turbine, and 11 solar projects. Additionally, it has 9 coal and 1
gas station, owned by joint ventures or subsidiaries.

3.1 History and Evolution

1975-1980

The company was founded on 7 November 1975 by India's former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi
as National Thermal Power Corporation Private Limited.

In 1976, Shri D.V Kapur took over on March 19 as first Chairman and Managing Director of
NTPC. On December 8 The Government of India cleared NTPC’s first pithead Super Thermal
Power Project at Singrauli in Uttar Pradesh. The authorized share capital of the company was Rs
125 crore. NTPC acquired its first patch of land at Singrauli in September.

The first major project of Rs.57.5 million was awarded for site leaving work at Singrauli in june
1977.
In 1978 the NTPC-Korba and NTPC-Ramagundamprojects cleared by government in January
and Febraury. Hon. Prime Minister Moraji Desai laid the foundation stone for NTPC-
Ramagundam on 14 November.

In 1979 the GoI approved the implementation of Farakka project in March. The authorized
share capital of the company rose from 125 crore to 300 crore.

In 1980 Former Soviet Union offered to assist in seeting up of power stations. Vindhyachal was
identified as first project for such assistance. The authorized share capital rose from 300 crore
to 800 crore in June.

1981-1986

On 29th December 1981, Hon. Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi ,laid the foundation stone of
NTPC-farakka.

In 1982 , [Link] Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi laid foundation for NTPC-Vindhyachal.

In 1983, NTPC-Ramagundam became operational on November 26 by commissioning its first

200 MW unit.

In 1984, the transmission line based on HVDC ( High voltage direct current)
technology,commission for power transmission from Rihand to Delhi. Singrauli project received
a World Bank Loan USD 150 million through the Government of India.

In 1985, GoI approved the setting up of 3 gas based combined-cycle projects by NTPC at Kawas,
Auraiya and Anta. For these projects,the world bank agreed to provide US$ 485 million,which
was the largest single loan in history of the bank.

1987-1992

In 1987, NTPC crossed the 5000 MW installed capacity mark. Korba also entered the 500 MW
phase by synchronising its first 500MW unit on May 31st.

In 1988, company raised first syndicated Japanese Loan of 30 billion JPY. Rihand entered the
operational phase by commissioning its first 500 MW unit on march [Link] first 500 MW unit
Ramagundam was commissioned on june 26th.

In 1989, consultancy division launched. First unit (88 MW) of first gas based combined cycle
power plant at Anta Rajasthan commissioned.
In 1990, Prime Minister Shram Awards presented by Hon. Prime Minister Shri Chandra Shekhar.

In 1991, Vindhyachal recorded completion of stage 1 activities by synchronizing its sixth and last
210 MW unit in February. The first unit of NTPC (Dadri) was commissioned on December 21st.

In 1992, the transmission systems owned by the company was transferred to Power Grid
Corporation Ltd.

1993-1998

In 1993 for the first time, IBRD extended direct loan of USD 400 million under time slice concept
for its projects.

In 1994, Jhanor-Gandhar (Gujarat) becomes the first Thermal power station to have
commissioned an integrated Liquid waste Treatment Plant (LWTP).

In 1995, NTPC celebrated 20years (1975-1995) of its existence. Various programmes were
organized to mark its 20th anniversary. ON july 25th, the new campus of Power Management
Institute (PMI) was inaugurated by Shri N.K.P. Salve, Union Minister of Power.

In 1996, Continuous running of 6th unit of Ramagundam for 406 days for the first time in India.
PLF of Talcher Thermal reached 43.7% from 18.7% at the time of takeover.

In 1997, Hon. Prime Minister Shri IK Gujral laid the Foundation Stone of NTPC Faridabad on 3rd
August.

In 1998, company commissioned the first Naptha based plant at Kayamkulam with a capacity
of 350 MW.

1999-2004

In 1999, Dadri Thermal Power Project, Uttar Pradesh adjusted the best in India with a PLF of
96.12%. Dadri, Uttar Pradesh certified with ISO-14001 on October 7th.

In 2000, company commenced construction of a first hydro-eectric power project of 800MW

capacity in Himachal Pradesh.

In 2001, NTPC- Vindhyachal’s 2260 MW unit was dedicated to the nation in July, Shri CP Jain,
CMD,NTPC, graced the occasion.
 In 2002, three wholly owned subsidiaries of NTPC viz. NTPC Electric Supply Company Ltd, NTPC
Hydro Ltd and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd incorporated, crossed the 20000 MW installed
capacity mark.

In 2003, NTPC participated in ‘Mission-2012 Power for All’ launched by GoI. Tripartite
agreement was signed with RBI.

In 2004, Contract for the first super critical thermal power plant at Sipat awarded.

2005-2010

In 2005, International Project Management Award for NTPC Simhadri, at the International
Project Management Association World Congress. NTPC was the only Asian company to receive
this award.

In 2006, [Link] Minister Shri Manmohan Singh laid the Foundation Stone of NTPC
Bongaigaon on 16 January.

In 2007, 765 KV switchyard transmission system energized at Sipat, the largest in the country.
Hon. Union Minister of Power Shri Sushil Kumar Shinde,Poer Secretary, Shri RV Shahi, Hon.
Chief Minister, Chattisgarh Shri Raman Singh and Shri T Saankaralingam, CMD, NTPC, at the
occasion with officials.

In 2008, Shri RS Sharma, CMD, NTPC, addressing the media, where he spoke on NTPC’s
achievements and future plans.

In 2009, NTPC energy technology research alliance (NETRA), NTPC’s Research and
Development wing.

In 2010, NTPC-Dadri unit-5 successfully commissioned. This was the first unit planned to
provide power to Commonwealth games to be organized in Delhi in October 2010.

2011-2016

In 2011, NTPC entered into Joint ventures with BHEL, Bharat Forge, NHPC, Coal India,
SAIL,NMDC, and NPCIL to expand its business of power generation.
In 2014, Dedication of Mouda Super Thermal Power Station Stage 1 by [Link] Minister
Narendra Modi on August 21,2014.

In 2015, Hon. Union Minister of Powe Shri Piyush Goyal honoured Shri AK jha, CMD, NTPC, for
NTPC’s contribution towards Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan, by successfully constructing toilets
across 17 states, covering 83 districts of India. 29000 toilets constructed under Swachh Bharat
Abhiyan.

In 2016, PM Shri Narendra Modi NarLaid Foundation Stone for Telangana STPP Phase-1. In
2016, NTPC- Dadri bagged Top plant 2016 Award, by Power magazine of USA in the Coal-fired
Generation category. Hon. PM Shri Narendra Modi dedicated NTPC- Koldam to the nation on 18
October.

2017-2018

In 2017, company received the SCOPE Award for RTI Act, 2005 Compliance at SCOPE
Meritorious Awards, in New Delhi from Hon. President Shri Pranab Mukherjee. Company also
implemented Coal Rationalisation for low-cost power. NTPC’s 2nd Masala Bond got listed on
London Stock Exchange on 8 May.

In 2018, Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated NTPC- Dulanga to the nation on 22
September. Hon. PM Shri Narendra MOdi laid the Foundation stone of NTPC- Patratu on 25
May.

2019-2021

In 2019, On 4th January in New Delhi, NTPC was awarded ‘Best Performing Utility of the Country
in Thermal Power Sector’ by Central board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP). Shri RK Singh, Hon.
Union Minister of State i/c for Power and New & Renewable Energy, presented the award to
Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC. The 2000th Coal rake from NTPC- Pakri Barwadih flagged off on
12 January. Shri AK Bhalla, Secretary, Power, inaugurated the Techno Galaxy Exhibition at IPS-
2019 in Raipur. Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC, was also present. The exhibition showcased
technologies and products by 42 Indian and international manufacturers. Achieved 6.81 NMT of
coal production from Pakri Barwadih. Production had crossed the mine plan target. The mine
started coal production from 1 April 2019.

In 2020, the aqusition of Government of India stake in THDC & NEEPCO happened.

In 2021 First Single-Day 1 BU generation achieved on 18th January.

2022-2023

Shri Narendra Modi, dedicated and laid the foundation stone of 5 Green Energy Projects of
NTPC in Ramagundam Floating solar Project (100MW) in Telangana, Kayamkulam Floating Solar
Project (92MW) in Kerala, Nokh solar Project (735MW) in Jodhpur, Green Hydrojen Mobility
project in Leh aand Green Hydrogen Natural- Gas blending project in Khawas.

In 2023, NTPC installed RE capacity crossed 3GW.

3.3 Shareholdings and Listings

The shareholding pattern of NTPC Ltd as on 30th September 2023 is, 51.10% is of Government of
India, 19.42% is of DII’s (including MF’s, Banks & IFI’s), 16.69% is of FII’s, 8.29% is of Body
corporate and insurance Co., 2.31% is of Resident individuals and HUF’s, 2.19% is of Others.

NTPC got listed on BSE and NSE on 5 November 2004. Against the issue price of 62 per share,
it closed the first day of listing with 75.55 per share. On the day of listing, it became the third
largest company in India in terms of market capitalisation. The equity shares of NTPC are listed
on the Bombay Stock Exchange, where it is a constituent of the BSE SENSEX index, and the
National Stock Exchange of India , where it is a constituent of the S&P CNX Nifty.

3.4 Employees
NTPC is strongly committed to the development and growth of all their employees as
individuals and not just as employees. They currently employ 18936+ people at NTPC (including
JVs and Subsidiaries). Productivity in terms of Man: MW ratio has improved from 0.51 in 2016-
17 to 0.3 during 2020-21.

Hiring is followed by 52 weeks of fully paid induction training consisting of theoretical input, on
job training, personality development & management modules. The induction program helps to
assimilate the new recruits coming from diverse backgrounds into the organizational values /
culture and to impart the required knowledge & skills to perform the job.

NTPC has introduced numerous initiatives that seek to enhance the creativity, innovation and
spirit of healthy competition among its employees. These platforms give individuals the
opportunity to enhance their personal growth, and at the same time, contribute to the
organization. These initiatives include NTPC Open Competition for Executive Talent (NOCET-a
theme based annual competition), NTPC Business Minds (Simulation Game Challenge). Last
year 93 teams all over NTPC participated in the NOCET competition and 1872 executives
participated in NTPC Business Minds games. Medha Pratiyogita, an annual quizzing event for
employees and families is a unique employee engagement activity which witnessed an
overwhelming participation of 3684 contestants last year . There are 150+ active Professional
circles in NTPC and nearly 2000 employees participate in the Quality Circles to find solutions to
problems in shop floor level.
