UNIT 1

• Asking for and spelling names (Alphabet)

Pronouncing the alphabet

In English, the alphabet is the set of 26 letters (from A to Z) that we use to represent English in
writing.

According to MacMillan Dictionary Blog the word alphabet comes from the Greek word ‘alphabētos’, a
combination of ‘alpha’ meaning ‘the beginning’, and ‘beta’ meaning ‘the second of many things’. Its
used to describe a set of letters is from the 1570s although it had been used from the early 15th
century to refer to something learned through reading.

It is very important to

always represent the
same sounds of
English.

What you see below the alphabet letters are the symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA),
which is considered extremely important when learning English by the experts in English grammar,
such as the grammarians from Aba Englihs website ([Link]) which states that one of the
most difficult aspects of learning English is pronunciation, and not only for those learning English as a
second language.
To help both language students and those who simply wish to learn a foreign language, linguists have
developed the API, the International Phonetic Alphabet. Aba English explains that this system of
universal symbols classifies all of the sounds present in the different languages around the world.
Each symbol corresponds to a phoneme (sound).
As a final practice, let’s check this arrangement of the alphabet letters not according its order, but
according the letters that have the same vowel sound.

The sound order of the English alphabet.

Check the second audio record in the website [Link] at:
