A robot that cleans garbage and dirt in water with a solar battery

The project we submitted to the competition is a concept of an externally controlled robot that can be
powered by solar and ordinary batteries, which will carry out the cleaning of garbage and sewage in
water bodies.

The parts of our robot will be as follows. One 50 watt solar battery to be installed on the main unit or 1
50 watt backup battery to replace the solar batteries in cloudy weather will provide the power source. 2
12 watt motors (to move the propellers) and one 6 watt motor (to move the debris on the water to the
trash can at the back of the robot) to drive our robot. A remote control system and a camera will be
installed for remote control of our robot. At the back of our robot, a garbage box covered with a special
net will be installed for collecting garbage, and this box can be opened and closed easily. In order for our
robot to be resistant to water and corrosion, special paint will be used and the parts in contact with
water will be painted.

In our modern world, environmental pollution has become a global problem. The fight against
environmental pollution has become a priority for most countries. As students, we would like to
contribute to this work. The robot project that we will prepare will implement the process of cleaning
plastic and other garbage in water bodies. the main advantage of our robot is that solar energy will be
used to drive the motors. Another positive aspect is that our robot can be controlled from a distance,
that is, the camera on the robot allows it to be controlled from a distance, even in invisible conditions,
by means of a special remote control. In our modern world, environmental pollution has become a

intended for cleaning the lakes and the Kur river located around the city of Baku. If our project wins the
competition, we are able to expand this project to a larger scale and to improve our robot to clean up oil
and gas contaminated water basins more professionally. We must not forget that the protection of the
hydrosphere is a prerequisite for the protection of the environment.

Common questions

The proposed robot aligns with global efforts to combat aquatic pollution by offering a clean, renewable energy-based solution to remove garbage and other pollutants from water bodies. This aligns with sustainable environmental policies worldwide seeking to mitigate human impact on natural ecosystems. By leveraging solar power and targeting the hydrosphere's health, the project supports international goals to preserve clean water sources, decrease pollution, and promote technological solutions to environmental issues .

Expanding the robot project to a larger scale could significantly boost environmental cleanup efforts by providing an effective solution to water pollution in more extensive and varied settings beyond the initial project scope, like lakes and rivers. Scalability would allow for tackling more substantial areas with severe pollution, potentially including industrial zones with oil and gas contaminants. The wider implementation can also enhance global awareness and participation in environmental protection, promoting technological innovation across different regions .

Using solar energy for the robot offers significant advantages in polluted water bodies by providing a renewable and sustainable power source that minimizes the environmental impact. This choice aligns with global efforts to combat pollution and reduces reliance on fossil fuels. The immunity to energy shortages from remote or hard-to-reach areas, where conventional power sources might be unreliable or unavailable, is another advantage. Moreover, it allows the robot to operate continuously in conditions where mains electricity is impractical .

Student-led initiatives like this robot are significant in addressing environmental issues as they bring fresh perspectives, innovation, and enthusiasm to problem-solving. They encourage collaboration across academic disciplines, leading to comprehensive solutions. Such projects also increase awareness and education about environmental challenges among the younger generation, fostering a culture of sustainability and responsibility. They are crucial in driving community involvement and can inspire policymakers and stakeholders to invest in similar technologies .

Improvements for handling oil and gas contamination could include developing specialized attachments or features such as absorbent materials or skimmers for oil collection, advanced sensors for detecting hydrocarbons, and an expanded storage capacity for hazardous materials. Upgrading the robot's material and equipment for anti-corrosion and chemical resistance would enhance its durability. AI and machine learning integration could optimize navigation and cleaning strategies in complex environments. Increasing its autonomy with more sophisticated control systems could also make operations less dependent on direct human control .

Special paint contributes to the robot's longevity and effectiveness by providing resistance to water and corrosion, which are prevalent challenges in aquatic environments. This protective layer prevents rust and extends the operational lifespan of the robot. By maintaining structural integrity, it ensures consistent performance and reduces maintenance needs, making the robot more reliable during its tasks of collecting garbage and cleaning up water pollutants .

The solar-powered robot proposed addresses water pollution challenges by utilizing sustainable energy to perform cleaning operations, making it energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. It is equipped with motors powered by a 50-watt solar battery, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources. The remote control system and camera allow it to efficiently navigate and clean visible and invisible pollutants, such as plastic and other garbage, in water bodies. The robot's adaptability in different weather conditions, using backup batteries, enhances its operational resilience .

Challenges in deploying the robot globally include diverse environmental conditions, varying levels and types of pollutants, and regional regulatory compliance. Addressing these challenges requires customizing the robot for different climates and water conditions, such as adjusting the propulsion system for varying currents. Expanding its sensor suite could better accommodate specific pollutants found in particular regions. Engaging with local authorities for compliance and gaining community support through educational programs would also be critical for successful deployment .

The robot operates effectively in water due to several key technical features: a 50-watt solar battery and backup battery for power, ensuring it remains operational in sunny and cloudy conditions; two 12-watt motors for propeller movement and a 6-watt motor for moving debris into the garbage collection area; remote control and camera systems for detailed navigation and operation; and special paint to resist water and corrosion, maintaining its integrity and functionality in aquatic environments .

Remote control is crucial for the robot’s functionality as it enables precise navigation and operation from a distance, even in areas with poor visibility. This feature allows operators to effectively manage the robot's movements and cleaning mechanisms through real-time feedback from the camera. It enhances the robot's ability to access and clean difficult-to-reach water bodies, increases operational safety, and reduces the necessity for direct human intervention in potentially hazardous environments .
