Philippine Literature in Spanish Era

During the Spanish period in the Philippines, literature was used to spread Christianity and the Spanish language. Religious works like pasyons about the Passion of Christ and tibags about St. Helena were written in Spanish and local languages and performed to teach Catholic doctrine. Secular works included epic poems like Florante at Laura, zarzuelas, and corridos that later incorporated nationalist themes as Filipinos expressed growing discontent with Spanish rule. Notable authors included Gaspar Aquino de Belen, Jose Rizal, and Andres Bonifacio.
