AFB Culture Report for Mycobacteria

This document is a lab report summarizing the results of a culture test for mycobacteria from a bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) sample. The direct smear did not detect any acid-fast bacilli (AFB). After 6 weeks of culture, no AFB growth was observed, so the culture was reported as negative. The document also describes the BACTEC MGIT 320 culture method used, which can detect mycobacteria in as little as 2-3 days depending on the bacterial load.

CULTURE FOR MYCOBACTERIA

REPORT:

Source : BAL
Date of Collection : 02/11/2023.
Date of receipt : 02/11/2023.

DIRECT SMEAR : No AFB seen.

CULTURE
6th Week : No AFB grown.

Status : Final.

Method:
Culture by BACTEC MGIT 320 is an in vitro diagnostic method designed for rapid detection of mycobacteria from clinical
specimens. The clinical specimens are processed and inoculated into culture tubes containing a fluorescent sensor.
Positivity depends on detecting the level of fluorescence which corresponds to the amount of oxygen consumed during
mycobacterial metabolism. Positive reports have been recorded as early as 2-3 days depending on the grade of infection.
A final report is given anytime when it is designated positive or at a maximum time period of 4-6 weeks, for those requiring
longer incubation or negative cases.

The BACTEC MGIT 320 declares a culture tube negative if it remains negative for six weeks (42 days).
