The tragedy of a woman who was burned to death in a village in Papua New Guinea reminded us

this Thursday that this dark and mysterious sociocultural phenomenon known as “witchcraft” did
not end in the Middle Ages, but is still valid in many parts of the planet.

The 22-year-old woman was accused of killing a neighbor’s son with witchcraft practices in the
town of Mount Hagen. In retaliation, she was apparently tortured with an iron instrument and tied
up before being doused and burned with gasoline by the young man’s relatives and other local
residents.
