APPLY FINISHING TOUCHES ON ATHLETIC SHIRTS

Lesson

What’s In

Applying Finishing Touches

One of the most important details of a constructed garment is the inclusion of
finishing touches. Finishing touches are fine and hand-finished details are required
as specific points on a garment as reinforcement.

Finishing

As the name implies, finishing covers all the operations required to complete a
garment. For most garments this process starts after top pressing.

Labels

Labels are of great benefit for the wearer, and an important aspect of finishing
sample garments is to ensure that the correct labels are in the right positions. Some
labels are attached during the production of the sample, whilst others are sewn on
when the garment is being finished. Most companies have a standard specification
for the types and positions of labels on their [Link] are legal requirements
for some types of garment labels, such as –
4
a. Flammability of materials used for children‟s nightwear.

b. Fibre content, for example 35% cotton – 65% polyester.

c. Garments produced for export have to carry a „country of origin‟ label.
This is usually inserted on the brand label.

Although there are no legal directives at the time of writing concerning the
following labels, most clothing manufacturers use them to provide guidance for the
consumer :

Care labels – These provide very specific information regarding washing and ironing
temperatures, whether or not bleaching agents can be used, and the suitable types of
dry cleaning solvents etc.

Size labels – These have to be suitable to the country or countries where the
garment is to be sold. It is pointless to export garments carrying British or EEC
sizing system labels to a country using a totally different sizing nomenclature.
Whenever possible, the size labels should be positioned so as to be immediately
visible and not necessitate a search on the part of the prospective purchaser.

Irrespective of the number and types of labels used for a garment, they should –

a. Be of an acceptable size
b. Maintain their legibility after repeated washing or dry cleaning during
the normal life of the garment.

c. Be securely affixed to the garment. It does not do much for the quality
image of a garment if labels flap around loosely or fall off after a short period
of wear.

d. Be easily seen by the consumer and not hidden away in awkward places.
In factories labels are attached by a variety of machines, ranging from the
regular sewing machine to microprocessor controlled machines which hold the
memories required to attach different sized labels. Some of these machines also have
an automatic label feed and positioning system which only requires the operator to
position the component or garment correctly.

Cleaning- The last stage of the finishing process is to thoroughly clean the garment
of all threads ends and stains. This means that the sample has to be gone over very
carefully because nothing gives a worse impression to a buyer than trailing threads
or unremoved stains on the inside or outside of the garment.
Final Touches - Sample garments often require some hand finishing with steam. A
very effective tool for this is the stand-mounted iron. The height and angle of the iron
can be adjusted in order to operate it in a static position, or it can be removed and
used by hand. A steam brush can be fitted to the iron sole when it is used to remove
shine and marks from velour, velvet and other napped cloths.

When the sample garment has been checked for finish it is ready for the final
phase of its manufacture – inspection – before it leaves the sample room.

The following are final Touches:

1. French tacks

A loose invisible joining between two parts of a garment that consists of

blanket stitches worked across several threads to form a bar.

There are several types of French tacks:

a. Blanket – stitch tack

b. Thread chain tack – is made by hand fromchain of loops.
c. Machine chain tack – uses machine straight stitch

2. Bar tacks - reinforcement for points of strain in clothing consisting of a bar-

shaped line of small stitches worked across several threads

There are two types of bar tacks:

a. Hand stitched bar tacks b. Machine bar tacks

3. Arrowheads – there is small triangular tacks are worked by hand or machine

across a seam to strengthen it at a point of potential strain. It is best to use a
matching color thread while a thick thread like button hole twist can be effective a
ha hand stitched arrowhead.

KINDS OF HEMMING STITCHES IN APPLYING FINISHING TOUCHES

1. VERTICAL HEMSTICH- a stitch that works from right

to left. It is used for stitching along the inside edges of collars
and cuffs.

2. SLANTING HEMSTITCH- This is less stable than vertical

hemstitch but is quicker to work. Form the stiches in the
same way as vertical .

3. HERRINGBONE STITCH- This is used for joining the

edges of facing Or interfacing to the inside of garment.

4. CATCH STITCH OR BLIND HEMMING STITCH

It is done under an edge or through a folded edge. It
can be used when hemming heavy fabrics or fabrics that
stitch to prevent a ridge from showing in the right side of
the garment

5. SLIP STITCH – This is used to attach a folded edge to

another fabric layer.

6
6 . BLIND HERRINGBONE STITCH
It works like hemming stitch from left to right of the
Garment, but just fold the hem edge back. Work the
herringbone stitches between the inside of the garment
hem and the underneath fabric.

7. BUTTON HOLE STITCH

I applies a net finished for hooks, eyes , button and
snap fastening.

What is It

Pressing Or Ironing: Important Finishing Process finished Garment

Pressing or ironing is the most important finishing process in readymade garments
sector which is done by subjecting a cloth to heat and pressure with or without steam to remove
unwanted creases and to impart a flat a appearance to the garments. Pressing or ironing also
done to introduce creases in the apparel. In the garments manufacturing industries, pressing is
termed as ironing.

7
Objects of Pressing or Ironing:

Pressing or ironing has different types of objects which are mentioned in the below:
1. Removal of unwanted creases and crinkles,
2. Shaping,
3. To apply creases where necessary,
4. Under pressing,
5. Final pressing.
All the above points have explained in the following:

1. Removal of unwanted creases and crinkles:

There are various types of unwanted creases and crinkles arise during
manufacturing the garments. These may be formed due to washing of garments.
Pressing or ironing is done here to remove those unwanted crinkles and creases from
the garments.

2. Shaping:
In the apparel dart and seam are used for proper shaping to the wearer. Pressing is
done here to increase the beauty and attractiveness of created shape by using dart
and seam. In some cases, it needs to shrink or stretch of garments parts for shaping.

3. To apply creases where necessary:

In garments manufacturing industry, pressing or ironing is done for applying
creasing effect in the apparel to increase the beauty of that. Also pressing or ironing
is done is done before sewing the garments to increase the beauty and
proper sewing.

4. Under pressing:
Before sewing the garments, some parts needed minimum pressing to do sewing
easily and beautifully which is called under pressing. In readymade garments
industry, under pressing is done for making coat, jacket and trouser.

5. Final pressing:
After making the garments, pressing is done finally before folding which is called
final pressing. Pressing or ironing is done here to increase the beauty
of garments and to impart a flat appearance to the garments.
The following two tabs change content below.

PROCEDURE IN PRESSING ATHLETIC SHIRTS

WHAT IS PRESSING?

Pressing or ironing is the most importantfinishing

process in ready-made garments sector which is done by
subjecting acloth to heat and pressure with or without
steam toremove unwanted creases and to impart a flat a
appearance to the garments. Pressing or ironing also
done to introduce creases in the apparel. In the garments
manufacturing industries, pressing is termed as ironing.

8
PRESSING TECHNIQUES

Pressing is essential to the good look of a garment. After cutting the excess
threads on finished garment, final pressing is done. The amount of final pressing can
be kept to a minimum touch up. Finish garment must have a well- pressed look. To
achieve this pressed look, there are techniques involved ad these are the following :

1. Pressed on the underside first to open seams and to smooth the

sleeve cap.
2. Press the rolled collar and lapel.
3. Reverse to the right side out, press the yoke.
4. Press the center front placer and hemline on the grain of the fabric.
5. Press the sleeves, then hand or fold as necessary.

1. Press seam flat

2. Press seam open
[Link] seam to either right or left side

Special Pressing instruction

Some fabrics cannot be pressed at all. Heat and moisture would melt the
fabric or damage the finish. Vinyl is subject to discoloration so do not press.

Care of Iron
Iron get dirty and pick up color from the fabric dye so clean your iron
periodically, especially in pressing the light colored fabric. The best way to clean the
soleplate of your iron is with commercial hot iron cleaner, sold at fabrics and sewing
stores. For the maintenance, always read the information that comes with any tool to
prolong the life of the tool.

Ironing and Pressing

Ironing is done by using a backland forth motion while pressing is done by

using an up-and-down. Ironing can stretch the fabric out of shape and cause
wrinkling and pocketing on finished garments so always press.

Pressing Special Fabric

1. The yarns of pile fabrics should not be flattened in pressing. Lay the fabric
pile wrong side up over the towel and press lightly.
2. Laminated fabrics need very little pressing. Paper should be slipped under
the seam allowance so that the iron will not come in contact with the foam.
3. Knitted fabrics should not be ironed back and forth since this may stretch
the fabric out of shape; a gentle stamping motion should be used example :
acrylic

Application of heat and pressure

A heat press is a machine engineered to imprint a design or graphic on a

substrate, such as a t-shirt, with the application of heat and pressure for a preset
period of time. While heat presses are often used to apply designs to fabrics, specially
designed presses can also be used to imprint designs on mugs, plates, jigsaw
puzzles, caps, and other products.

9
Both manual and automatic heat presses are widely available. A new style of
press that is semi-automatic has entered the market as well, allowing for a manual
closing process with an automatic, electromagnetic opening. Digital technology in
newer machines enables precise control of heat and pressure levels and timing. The
most common types of heat press employ a flat platen to apply heat and pressure to
the substrate. In the "clamshell" design, the upper heat element in the press opens
like a clamshell, while in the "swing-away" design, the heat platen swings away from
the lower platen. Another design type a "draw style press" allows for the bottom
platen to be pulled out like a drawer away from the heat for preparation of the
graphic. Vacuum presses utilize air pressure to provide the necessary force and can
achieve high psi ratings.
Most heat presses currently on the market use an aluminum upper-heating
element with a heat rod cast into the aluminum or a heating wire attached to the
element. For high-volume operations involving the continuous imprinting of items,
automatic shuttle and dual platen transfer presses are used. The substrates to be
imprinted are continuously loaded onto the lower platen and shuttled under the heat
platen, which then applies the necessary heat and pressure.
The pattern is printed in sublimating ink on sublimating paper which allows
the pattern to transfer. You can get some highly effective patterns and great effects
using this technique.

What’s More

Pack Finished Garment

Packaging
The wraps of product is called package. In the context of the industry,
materials to be handled, shipped and used are allowed for packaging to facilitate
proper handling of many products.

Packaging Materials

The design elements like shape, texture and color illustrate packing the
contributes to the package. Modern package is not only a mere product container
but also primary function pf protecting the contents.

A nice packaging of garments sometimes increases sales at the retailer‟s point.

When we look at mass garment manufacturing for the export market and home
market, we need to take care of the final packaging of articles, transportation of
goods from manufacturing house to a retail shop and easy distribution of color and
sizes to the stores. Let‟s look at an example -from the manufacturing unit to the

10
retail shop or to the brand‟s central warehouse readymade garments are transferred
in cartons.

In a garment production unit, finished garments are folded and packed in

individual poly bags. Later packed garments are placed into carton boxes. There are
several criteria for the packing of the garments and packing into cartons which are
explained in this article.

There are generally two kinds of packing the garment.

Packing garment into poly bags - Traditionally garments are packed into poly bags
before placing them into cartons box. Garments may be packed individually in the
poly bags and the ratio will be specified by the buyer.

1. Single piece packing – a single garment is packed into the polybag or into a
cardboard box.

2. Blister Packing: In blister packing, more than one garments are packed into a
polybag in a size and colour ratio. Later those poly bags are packed into a carton
box.

Packing garment without polybag

The other method is that the garments are just folded and arranged in the
carton boxes without putting them in the polybag. When it comes packing multiple of
garments into carton boxes colour and sizes are considered as main criteria for
differentiating packing method. Different ways of packing are as follows:

3. Solid Packing: In this method of packing, the carton box will include garments of
a single color and same size. For example, 20 shirts of a similar color say navy blue
and the size say S will be put in one carton box.

Assorted packing or Ratio packing:

4. Ratio Packing: In this method, the carton box includes garments of the same
color but of different sizes according to the ratio. For example, S : M : L : XL = 5 : 7 :
7 : 5.

5. Mixed Packing: In this method the carton box includes garments of different
colors but of same size or garments with different colors and different sizes in a
particular ratio form.

11
Garment packing based on the folding method:

Traditionally garments are folded prior to packing. Folding of garments are done as
followings
1. First garments are folded flat as per specific dimension and later packed into a
polybag.
2. Garments are folded and packed into individual cardboard box instead of packing
into poly bag. Like men‟s shirts are packed in a cardboard box.
3. Garments are not folded at all – full garment is packed into a polybag in a hanger
and placed on the carton.
4. Garments are not folded and not packed into an individual polybag. Garments are
directly placed into carton boxes. Later in retail shop garment are placed in racks
using hangers.
5. Crashed fold – garments like shorts, boxers, cargo pants crashed folded and items
of different colors are packed into a poly bag.

You might have seen many other ways of packing garments. If you are doing
export manufacturing you have to follow packing method as instructed by the
buyer. In case you own a brand, you can design your packing method based
on product type or follow the market trend for packing of particular types of
garments.

Labeling of garments

Project labels must be informative such as the duration of the garments,

project preparation and skills learned by the students. Label must be pasted or
pinned or garments.
All finished projects are to be labeled to identify the owner. Project label is
written on the fourth sheet of the paper bearing the name of the student, year and
section, name of project , number of the project, date started , date finished, swatch ,
cost of the finished projects and the teacher‟s signature. In checking the project the
grade will be based on the given criteria for evaluation and dare of submission. In
the industry labelling differs to that of the school.

The following are the labeling information:

A. Brand name and trademark
B. Name of the manufacturer
C. Amount and fiber content- ex. 90% cotton, 10% polyester.
D. Country of origin- ex. Made in the Philippines
E. Care instruction ex. Machine wash cold, do not bleach, warm iron, dry
cleanable, machine wash warm.
