DIY Guide: Generators vs. Electric Motors

The document provides instructions for making both a generator and electric motor. It explains that a generator converts mechanical energy to electrical energy through a dynamo, while a motor converts electrical energy to mechanical motion. It then gives step-by-step procedures for creating a DIY generator using a dynamo and crank, and an electric motor using a coil, magnet, and battery that generates rotation through electromagnetic interaction. The overall purpose is to teach how these devices work by having the audience build simple examples.

(Do you know what’s the difference between Generators and Electric Motor?

Generators produce electricity from mechanical energy, while electric motors

convert electrical energy into mechanical motion. Together, they play essential
roles in powering a wide array of modern technology and infrastructure.)

(Good Afternoon everyone, My name is Francis Dale A. Acibo, the presenter of

Group 2, and I will show you first the step-by-step explanation of how this DIY
Generator works, then we will discuss about the Electric Motor afterwards.)

Generator

(Before we start, here are the objectives for this presentation.)

Objectives:

(At the end of this presentation, you should be able to)

- Learn about how generator works.

- Learn about the procedures. (And you should be able to)

- Know the materials. (that are needed)

The fundamental concept of generator involves converting mechanical energy

into electrical energy. A DIY generator using a dynamo is a simple and practical
way to generate electricity.

(Let us now proceed on learning the procedures)

Procedure:

(First, we have to know about the)

1. **Dynamo Basics:**

A dynamo is a type of generator that converts mechanical energy into electrical

energy. As it is activated, it generates an electric current.

(Here are the)

2. **Materials Needed:**

(1st we have )

**Dynamo:** Obtain a small hand-cranked dynamo. You can find these in

hobby shops or online.

(Then we have the )

**Base:** Prepare a stable base or structure to mount the dynamo securely.

(And finally the)

**Handle:** Create or find a handle that can be attached to the dynamo for
manual cranking.

(After knowing all the materials, we can now proceed on )

3. **Mounting the Dynamo:** Attach the dynamo securely to the base so that it
remains stable during operation.

(Then, the)
4. **Output Connections:** Connect the output terminals of the dynamo to the
device you want to power. You may need to use wires and connectors for this
purpose.

(After that, we will now proceed on)

5. **Cranking the Handle:** Begin cranking the handle. The mechanical energy
you apply to the handle gets converted into electrical energy through the
dynamo.

(Then we have this)

6. **Powering Devices:** The generated electricity can be used to power small

electronic devices like this small light emitting object.

In summary, a mini generator transforms mechanical energy into electrical

energy through the principles of electromagnetic induction.

(We are now done discussing about the Generator. Let us now proceed to our
next topic, which is the Electric Motor)

Electric Motor

(The objectives for this presentation, of course to)

Objectives:

- Learn about how an electric motor works.

- Learn about the procedure.

- Know the materials that are used.

An electric motor is a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical

energy, typically through the use of electromagnetic phenomena.

(Here are the)

Step-by-step Procedure for Making an Electric Motor:

(First, is to)

1. Gather Materials: You'll need a battery, insulated copper wire, a small

magnet, a piece of wood block, marker, clay, paper clips, electrical tape and a
cutter.

(Then we have to,)

2. Prepare the Base: Prepare a wood block to use as the base for your motor.

(Number three)

3. Create the Coil: Wrap the copper wire around a cylindrical object (like a pen or
marker) several times to create a coil. Leave some extra wire at both ends.

(Number)

4. Attach the Battery: Place the battery on the base, perpendicular to the coil.

(Number)

5. Attach the Coil: Attach the coil to the paper clips.

(Number)

6. Attach the Magnet: Place the magnet on the base, in the center of the coil.
(Number)

7. Secure Components: Secure all components in place using an electrical tape

to prevent them from moving or coming loose during operation

(Then for number 8, we have to)

8. Test the Motor: When everything is connected, give the coil a gentle spin to
start the motor. It should start rotating due to the interaction between the
magnetic field of the coil and the magnet.

(And finally, number 9, we have to)

9. Observe and Adjust: Watch the motor in action and make any necessary
adjustments to ensure smooth rotation. You may need to experiment with the
number of coil turns or the position of the magnet.

In summary, an electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical

energy into mechanical energy. Most electric motors operate through the
interaction between the motor's magnetic field and electric current in a wire
winding to generate force.

So that's all for today’s presentation. Once again, My name is Francis Dale Acibo,
and I am the presenter of group 2. Thank you and good afternoon.
