A pleasant morning everybody, I am Janah Mariz Loquillano and will discuss about housing and

fencing
This topic includes the different types of housing, which depends on the system of rearing, as
well as the floor space and are so you can expect that there will be computation. Now we will
also talk about Quarantine area, facilities, and different type of fence.
Page 2: Goat are among the earliest domesticated animals by human and have been introduced
to environmental stress factor such as rain, wind, and cold. That’s why the primary function of
the housing is to protect the animals from these stress factors. And to protect them from theft,
predators, infectious disease, and traumatic injuries. Your goat can be easily steal if you don’t
build a secure and proper housing and fencing that’s why it is important. Predator can pray on
small ruminant such as your goat. In Philippines, snakes are the one who prays on your goat.
Well sometimes dog, they tend to chase on goats if they are not well trained. Infectious
disease, so when we say housing this includes isolation and quarantine areas which separated
healthy animals from infected ones and last is traumatic injuries. Goats tend to roam around the
facility and when building a goat house we should make sure its durability and capability to hold
the number and size of goats.
Page 3: Goats have know or they have natural instinct that they are a pray to many predators
and are prone to danger that’s why they stay on elevated places to look out for possible danger
that may come their way. And, goats are hygienic animals. They hate to stay in water-logged and
muddy places. So they try as much to stay away from dew and from their own urine and
droppings.
Page 4: Goats doesn’t require a fancy housing, they just need a shelter that can protect them
from environmental stress factor. Although that is the case, make sure that the comfortability of
the animal should not compromise. (Low cost ra lageh pero dali ra diay to maguba).
Question: Why do goats hate water?
Goats have a defense mechanism where they seek shelter at site of water or rain because they
are susceptible to respiratory ailments like pneumonia and hypothermia. So its like an
integrated management where you can utilize the fodders in the area as a feed for the goats.
Clean water should be available at all time as to avoid dehydration for goats. Proper ventilation,
for a comfortable house east-west orientation with generous provision for ventilation /air
movement to dry the floor will be suitable.
Page 5: So there are different type of shed for goat husbandry and breeding measures breeding
and selection, reproductive events, kid rearing, sanitation, and hygiene.
Page 6: General flock 60 adult breeding females (nannies) are housed in this shed. They are
shed separately so that there would be no unnecessary contact or mating with buck In
temperate region like warm climate it is suggested to use strong wood not Iron.
Page 7: The use of partition in buck shed is for them not to away2 with each other
Page 8: This is a separate shed for kidding. These goat pens allow the does to take care of her
kids without interference or distraction from other goats.
Question: What will happen when kidding occur during rain season?
Page 9: Kids from weaning upto attaining maturity are housed in these sheds at the rate of
about 25 animals per shed. Unweaned, weaned but immature and nearby maturity lambs can
be housed separately. Mas dako ang dimension sa unweaned because naa paman ang mama.
Page 10: So there are 3 types of goat house (Goat Housing over ground, Goat housing over pole
and concrete house).
Page 11: Goat Housing Over Ground. this type of houses are made over the ground. This is the
most common house for goats generally for backyard raising. You may make the floor of this
type of goat house with brick and cement or simply with soil. It will be better, if you can spread
some dry straw over the floor in this housing system. It is simple, and low cost and easy to
manage but poor ventilation and hard to clean up the manure and may have water stagnation
(not well drained).
Goat Housing Over Pole: This type of house system is elevated about 1-1.5 meters above ground
using a pole. Usually the pole, walls and floors are made with bamboo or wood. Verry suitable
for goat farming. In this type of housing it recommended to have a concrete flooring to easily
collect manure. It is well ventilated, low cost.
Concrete Housing: This types of goat houses are fully made with concrete,. But concrete houses
have many advantages. It is very easy to clean the house, and easy to always keep your goats
safe from all types of predators cause its stable. You can construct the house over ground or
over concrete poles. But it is very expensive method of goat housing. This type of housing
system is suitable for intensive rearing system.
Page 12: Flooring and Its Area. It Is verry important to choose a right flooring for your goats as
well as to know the area needed depending on the number of head and expected heads there is
in a farm. There are two essential elements to consider and those are the building cost and
comfort and welfare of the animal. So it is ideal approach to construct a house that’s cheaper
but it should compromise the animal’s comfort and welfare. Because for the purpose of
production. The floor can be constructed with bamboo or wooden slats, evenly spaced to allow
manure to pass down. Concrete ground floor under slatted flooring is recommended for ease of
manure collection.
Page 13: This image here is the recommended pen for goat. You can use nipa shingles or nipa,
coconut fronds and G.I sheet is 2 mWx 3mL from the floor usually good for a pair of goat . As
for the wall, you can use bamboo, cocolumber or wooden slabs for proper ventilation and easy
cleaning. It is recommended to elevate the goat house 1-1.5 m above ground for easy access of
manure and avoidance of water stagnation. As you can see, the feed through is attatched
outside para dali ra mabutang ang fodder and maiwasan na malibangan or maihian nila ang
feed. So that’s it for the exterion
Page 14: As for the interior, as you can see na integrate sila sa isa ka area or house, this is
usually para sa small farmers. So sa floor pweddi bamboo and wooden slabs which is 1 cm apart
lang para na mahulog dali ang tae at the same time dli ra kaayu layu nga ma uncomfortable ang
hayop mo lakaw. Dayun dapat baga pudsya arun malikayan ang mga traumatic injury no like 2.5
cm iyang kabagaon ug 5cm ang kalapadon. So in a pen there should be a feed through, water
through, and brooder box. In addition, there should be a partition.
Page 15: So this is the recommended floor space for goat at different age. So kaning mga
reproductive parameters is basehan na siya in calculating the floor space and for calculating the
expected heads.
Question: Can someone solve this equation?
Page 16: Type of flooring so we have 3 (Straw/dirt flooring, Concrete flooring and bamboo or
wooden slats floor).
Page 17: The straw and dirt method essentially works like cat litter. The same goes for when
your goat poops in the house. If you use straw as the floor, you will not need to regularly clean
the house, because all the waste will compost at the bottom. However, every week or so you
will need to add a new layer of dry hay to the mix in order to keep your goat dry and replenish
the hay that has been decomposed. While this method requires less time cleaning on a regular
basis, your goat house will most likely have a pretty bad odor.
Page 18: So kani siya nga flooring no is mas suitable siya for over the ground housing system, so
every week is gana limpyohan ang rubber mat, Although it requires much wor, must hygienic
siya kisa sa straw. Kay kung dli na limpyohan, wet floor could be a breeding ground sa pathogen
on wich the goat are susceptible.
Page 19: nic ni siya for air circulation no, as well sap ag collect sa manure and waste fodder.
Although I dli tarung ang placement, it could lead to traumatic injuries.
Page 20: Goats of different age and stages should be separated. Lahi ang pen sa ram, doeling,
kidding, kid pen and so on. Ewe that is ready to give birth should be located on the further side
of the pen to avoid interaction and distraction. And itapad ang pen para sa buck and doeling
because the presence of buck have apossitive effect on the estrus of goat. Ang buck pen size is
dapat maka accommodate siya kung pila kabuok male breeder depending sa male to female
ratio na 1: 20-25. Sa Grower pen naman is sa mga nalutaas na na goat within 3 months is dapat
ma accommodate niya. If wala pa na castrate ang male goat ana nga time is pwedi pud
magbuhat og movable pen para malikayan ang untimely mating. Dayun ang iyang partition is
naka design for good air circulation or ventilation. Sa purtahan sa partition is dapat pasulod
iyang design.
Page 21: So ang pen is different from goat house, and pen is a small apart of the goat house but
ng pen is pwedi siya naa sa sulod or sa gawas. Diba ang goat house is naa siyay stalls or
individual pens, ang pen specifically is pwedi siya outdoor space area where pwedi maka roam
around ang goat but is enclosed with a fence.
Sa partition wall as the name suggest is that there will be separation of the pen. So that dili mag
away ang mga bucks, there wont be untimely breeding, para ma separate goats depending on
their age. Pwedi gamiton wall is concrete or wooden slabs but recommended is wooden slabs
because must cheaper and is good for air circulation where as kung mag concrete is although lig
on siya, more expensive and have poor ventilation. And para maka avoid na mo ambak ang goat
is dapat naa sa around 1.35m-15m ang partion wall.

Page 22: When choosing a suitable roof for a goat, there are several consideration to consider
such as weather resistance, ventilation, and durability. Select a roofing material that can
withstand the local weather conditions, including rain, wind, and sunlight. This helps ensure the
longevity of the roof and provides adequate protection for the goats. The roof design should
allow for proper ventilation to prevent the buildup of heat and humidity within the goat house.
Adequate airflow is essential for the goats' health and comfort. Choose a roofing material that is
durable and resistant to damage from environmental factors, such as strong winds, rain or
extreme temperatures, to minimize maintenance and replacement costs also ensures the safety
of the animal.

Page 23: What we have here are the types of roofing material, we have these indigenous
roofing material, Anahaw, Cogon and Nipa. Then these galvanized Iron.
Cogon- is an indigenous roofing material made from dried cogon grass which is commonly used
sa southeast Asian country. Cogon roofs are known for their natural insulation properties and
their ability to provide shade and ventilation, making them suitable for hot climates. It is also
cost-effective roofing material means barato ra but the disadvantage is it has poor durability so
kailangan siya frequently ilisan ug I maintain and is suceptilble to pest infestation pariah sa
termites or lain nga mga insect which maka affect sa iyang durability.
Anawhaw-An anahaw roof is another type of traditional roofing material commonly found in
Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines. It is made from the leaves of the anahaw palm
tree so its native. To create an anahaw roof, the leaves of the anahaw palm are carefully
harvested and then arranged in overlapping layers to form a waterproof covering. Goodiyang
durability becauseit can withstand rot and decay meansdili siya dali masira, it provide excellent
protection against the elements, including heavy rain and strong winds. But it also need regular
maintenance same sa cogon.
Nipa-it is made from the leaves of nipa palm. Nipa roofs are valued for their ability to keep
interiors cool and well-ventilated, making them well-suited to tropical climates. It is resilient
againt strong winds. While nipa roofs are relatively inexpensive and environmentally friendly,
they do require regular maintenance to prevent decay and damage from pests.
Galvanized Iron-Using galvanized iron as a roofing material for a goat house can be a practical
and durable choice. Galvanized iron is highly resistant to rust and corrosion, which makes it a
long-lasting roofing material, even in outdoor environments. Galvanized iron roofing sheets are
relatively easy to install, especially when compared to traditional thatched roofs or other
natural materials. Galvanized iron roofing sheets are relatively easy to install, especially when
compared to traditional thatched roofs or other natural materials. Galvanized iron is often more
cost-effective than other roofing materials, making it a budget-friendly option. During heavy rain
or hail, galvanized iron roofs can be noisy, which may cause stress for some animals. So kung
mag gamit ug G.I as a roofing material pwedi magbutang thatched materialfor maximum
comfort sa [Link] islike mga dried leaves, straws.
The roof should be 2-3m high from the flooring, and in Philippine codition mas better ang open
roof type kay diba init kaayu sa pinas and we want proper ventilation so mas prefer na open
roof siya.
Question: How to regularly maintain the indigenous material roof?
-Keep an eye out for signs of pest infestation, such as insects or rodents. Implement measures
to control pests and prevent them from causing damage to the roof. If any part of the roof is
damaged beyond repair, replace it with fresh indigenous material. This helps maintain the
structural integrity of the roof. Periodically inspect the roof for signs of damage, such as holes,
loose thatch, or broken bamboo. Repair any damage promptly to prevent further deterioration.
[Link] 24: Now there are other facilities that should be included in a goat house and those are:
Feed and water through, movable kid box and nylon brushes.
Page 25: So the feeding through should have partitions of vertical spacing enough for the goat
to put its head through during the feeding. And it should be elevated above floor so that to
avoid the kid from jumping unto it. As for the water, it should regularly maintain para iwas
contamination from their feces or urine.
Page 26: So ang purpose ani is it provides them shelter from wind or cold during winter and
avoids hypotherma and pneumonia .
Page 27: Dibakay ang mga goat is hygienic kaayu sila, they want to clean themselves as to why
dapat magbutang ug nylon brushes so that they can groom themselves and para mawala ang
mga buling sailing lawas.
Page 28: So dire na part no is where we have confusion so now we will differentiate isolation
from quarantine area.
Page 29: So in laymans term, animals that are already sick should be separated and isolated
from the healthy ones and that those animals that have contact with that sick animal should be
quarantine and should be monitor if symptoms prevail. Isolation and quarantine areas help
prevent the spread of diseases among the goat herd. New goats introduced to the farm may
carry diseases that could infect the existing herd. By isolating new arrivals in a designated area,
you can monitor them for signs of illness and prevent the spread of contagious diseases to
healthy animals.
Page 30: So loafing area could be optional
Page 31: So loafing area is aplace where the goat are let loose near the goat house for them to
graze on the area. It is usually surrounded with fence. It could also serve as a exercise ground
for them, you could put some bench or rock where they can climb on.
Page 33: Fencing is utilized in goat farm for controlling and confining goats as to avoid them
going outside the premises. So sa mga na visit natu na goat far no is nag utilize silag fence to
keep their goat inside the area. The purpose of the pen is also to protect your goat from the
predators.
Page 34: So ang live fence posts is nag establish kag fence with fodder trees like sa barbed wire
is gihimo nimog support ang fodder trees pareha anang ipil2 or madre de cacao aswhat we saw
sa goat house natu. It could also be a additional feed resource for goat. Ang kalainan sa
hedgegrows sa live fence posts is wala siyay barbed wire. Pure thick shrub and plant rajud siya
which is not very suitable for goat because kay mangita jud na silage lusot and maigo sa mga
small spacesso theres a possibility na maka wala sila.
Page 35: Last is Standard wire fence. Iyang katas on from the ground should be atleast 1.5m. So
kani siya na type nga fencing ang kasagara ginagamit no dre, barbed wire nga naka attached sa
wood. So and distance from wood to wood is 5 m and make sure ang wire is 1 foot lang ang
kalayuon from the ground to discarriage the animal na maka takas. Nindut ni siya no ky lig on.

Common questions

Goats naturally instinct to seek elevated places as a defense mechanism against predators, aligning with their tendency to avoid danger by seeking visibility for early predator detection . Elevated housing also helps keep them away from damp conditions, which they avoid due to their hygienic nature and vulnerability to respiratory ailments like pneumonia . This kind of housing prevents water stagnation and facilitates better water runoff, reducing pathogen risk on flooring materials . Consequently, elevated housing aligns with goats' behavioral instincts and enhances their overall welfare by addressing both safety and health concerns .

Effective ventilation in goat housing is critical for preventing heat and humidity buildup, essential for maintaining the health and comfort of the animals . Key features include an open roof design to promote airflow, appropriate orientation relative to prevailing winds, and adequate height to allow warm air to escape . Such designs prevent respiratory issues and other heat-related health problems by ensuring constant air circulation and removing excess moisture . Choosing materials that facilitate airflow, like slatted walls, further complements these design elements, making ventilation a pivotal component of healthy goat living conditions .

Indigenous roofing materials play a significant role in goat housing by providing natural insulation and ventilation suitable for tropical climates like that of the Philippines . Cogon roofs, made from dried cogon grass, offer shade and insulation but require frequent replacement due to poor durability and pest susceptibility . Anahaw roofs, made from palm tree leaves, offer good durability and resistance to decay but also need regular maintenance to uphold structural integrity . Nipa roofs keep interiors cool and ventilated, though they need regular maintenance to prevent decay . These materials are cost-effective but require careful maintenance to ensure long-term functionality .

Concrete flooring in goat housing is advantageous due to its ease of cleaning and durability, providing a stable environment that simplifies manure management and enhances predator protection . However, it is an expensive option and can be less comfortable for goats compared to traditional bamboo or wooden slats, which are cost-effective and allow for easier manure passage . Traditional materials may provide better comfort but pose challenges in hygiene and durability, often needing more frequent maintenance and having suboptimal durability under wet conditions . Balancing these factors, concrete floors might be better suited for intensive rearing, while traditional materials align with budget constraints or less intensive setups .

Goats contribute to natural manure management by generating droppings that can be composted into a valuable resource for agricultural use . Housing designs should incorporate features that facilitate easy collection and processing of manure, such as slatted floors that allow waste to fall through to a collection area beneath . This design not only optimizes manure collection but also minimizes cleaning labor and enhances hygiene within the housing structure . Employing this approach can capitalize on goats' manure output, turning it into an asset for organic farming practices and improving overall farm efficiency .

When designing housing for goats, it's essential to consider protection from environmental stress factors such as rain, wind, and cold. The housing should provide a secure and durable structure that can also protect goats from predators like snakes and, occasionally, dogs . Additionally, proper housing includes isolation and quarantine areas to prevent the spread of infectious diseases . Elevated structures are advisable to keep goats away from water-logged areas, which they naturally avoid due to their hygienic instincts and susceptibility to respiratory ailments . Proper ventilation is crucial for maintaining air quality and drying floors to prevent health issues .

Fencing is essential in goat farming as it confines goats within the premises, preventing them from straying and protecting them from predators . Effective fencing solutions like live fence posts with fodder trees also provide additional feed resources, contributing to farm efficiency . However, without barbed wire, goats may find escape routes through hedgerows, indicating the importance of choosing suitable fencing types for containment and protection . Furthermore, well-designed wire fences at appropriate heights and distances ensure goats' safety while allowing for practical and sustainable management of the farm .

Specific flooring materials and dimensions in goat housing are crucial due to the varying requirements of goats at different life stages to ensure their comfort and prevent injuries. Young, unweaned goats require flooring with adequate spacing to prevent droppings from accumulating while providing comfort underfoot due to their smaller size . Older or larger goats need sturdier construction materials like wooden slats or concrete to support their weight and reduce injury risks . Correct spacing and choice of material optimize hygiene, facilitate easy cleaning, and ensure that all goats can move comfortably, reflecting both a welfare consideration and a practical farming approach .

Straw/dirt flooring offers a cost-effective and low-maintenance solution where waste can compost at the bottom, though it can result in poor air quality due to odor . It necessitates periodic addition of dry hay to maintain dryness and comfort, but it can be less hygienic as it may harbor pathogens if not maintained properly . Conversely, more hygienic flooring options, such as rubber mats that require regular cleaning, provide a cleaner living environment that minimizes disease risk, though they demand more labor and upkeep . Choosing between these options depends on balancing the costs with health benefits and ease of maintenance .

Isolation and quarantine areas are critical in managing infectious diseases within goat herds. Isolation areas are used to separate sick animals from healthy ones to prevent the spread of diseases . Quarantine areas are designated for animals that have been exposed to illness or are new arrivals to the farm, allowing for observation and early detection of symptoms before integrating them with the healthy herd . This proactive management helps control potential outbreaks and minimizes the risk of widespread disease transmission .
