2. History & Biography
Abdul Sattar Edhi was born in 1928 in a small village of Bantva
near Joona Garh, Gujrat (India). The seeds of compassion for the suffering humanity were sown in his
soul by his mother’s infirmity. When Edhi was at the tender age of eleven, his mother became paralyzed
and later got mentally ill. Young Abdul Sattar devoted himself for looking after all her needs; cleaning,
bathing, changing clothes and feeding. This proved to be a losing battle against the disease, and her
helplessness increased over the years. Her persistent woeful condition left a lasting impression on young
Edhi. The course of his life took a different turn from other persons of his age. His studies were also
seriously affected and he could not complete his high school level. For him the world of suffering became
his tutor and source of wisdom.
Edhi’s mother died when he was 19. His personal experience made him think of thousands and millions,
suffering like his mother, around with nobody to look after them. He thought that he had a call to help
these people. He had a vision of chains of welfare centers and hospitals that could be opened to alleviate
the pain of those suffering from illness and neglect. He also thought of the in-human treatment meted out
to the mentally ill, the insane and the disabled persons.
Even at this early age, he felt personally responsible for taking on the challenge of developing a system of
services to reduce human miseries. The task was huge he had no resources. But it was something that he
had to do even if he had to walk to the streets if he had to beg for this purpose.
Edhi and his family migrated to Pakistan in 1947. In order to earn his living, Abdul Sattar Edhi initially
started as a peddler, later became a commission agent selling cloth in the wholesale market in Karachi.
After a couple of years, he left this occupation and with the support of some members of his community
decided to establish a free dispensary. He became involved in this charity work. However, soon his
personal vision of a growing and developing system of multifarious services made him decide to establish
a welfare trust of his own and named it as “Edhi Trust”.
An appeal was made to the public for funds. The response was good, and Rs.200, 000/- were raised. The
range and scope of work of Edhi Trust expanded with remarkable speed under the driving spirit of the
man behind it. A maternity home was established and emergency ambulance service was started in the
sprawling metropolis of Karachi with a population of over 10 million.
More donations were received as people’s confidence in the activities of the Trust grew. With the passage
of time, masses gave him the title of the” Angel of Mercy.”
Abdul Sattar Edhi was married in 1965 to Bilquis, a nurse who worked at the Edhi dispensary. The couple
has four children, two daughters and two sons. Bilquis runs the free maternity home at the headquarter in
Karachi and organizes the adoption of illegitimate and abandoned babies. The husband-wife team has
come to share the common vision of single minded devotion to the cause of alleviation of human
sufferings and a sense of personal responsibility to respond to each call for help, regardless of race, creed
or status.
Edhi involves himself in every activity at Edhi Foundation from raising funds to bathing corpses. Round
the clock he keeps with him an ambulance which he drives himself and makes rounds of the city
regularly. On finding a destitute or an injured person anywhere on the way, he escorts him to the Relief
Centre where immediate attention is given to the needy person. In spite of his busy work schedule with
the Foundation, Edhi finds enough time to spare with the residents of the orphanages called “Edhi
Homes”. He is very fond of playing and laughing with the children. A short strongly built man in his early
seventies with a flowing beard and a ready smile, Edhi is popularly called “Nana” (Grandfather) by the
residents of “Edhi Homes”.
Despite his enormous fame and the vast sums of money that passes through his hands, Edhi adheres to a
very simple and modest life style. He and his family live in a two room apartment adjacent to the
premises of Foundation’s headquarter. Neither Edhi nor Bilquis receives any salary. They live on the
income from government securities that Edhi bought many years ago to take care of their personal needs
for the rest of their lives, thereby freeing them to devote single mindedly to their missionary work.
He shuns publicity for the fear of becoming haughty. As the credibility and fame grew and the name of
Edhi became a house-hold word, people started approaching him for becoming chief guest on special
occasions. In an interview given to a journalist in Lahore in 1991, Edhi said, “I want to request the people
not to invite me to social gatherings and inaugural ceremonies. This only wastes my time which is wholly
devoted to the well being of our people.”
Although Edhi has a traditional Islamic background, he has an open and progressive mind on a number of
sensitive social issues. He strongly supports the notion of working women. Of the 2,000 paid workers of
the Edhi Foundation around 500 are women. They work in various capacities in-charges of Edhi centers,
heads of maternity homes and dispensaries and office workers. More-over, several women volunteers
help Edhi Foundation in fund raising. Edhi encourages women to do all sorts of work without
differentiation.
3. Made leader
[Link] is one of the most hardworking entrepreneurs of Pakistan. He was a real leader. In my
opinions he was a made leader because has built a reputation as one of the most honorable
human beings and the organization he has made is a role model for every social worker. He won
much recognition including international and national awards.

4. Turning point of his life when he became a leader
Edhi began his path toward humanitarian heroism when he was very young. His mother was
instrumental in opening his awareness of others, in order to get him to feel their pain and need.
She began his training by giving him two paisa every day (one paisa is equal to 1/100th of 1
penny). “She then asked him to spend one on a poor and needy person and one on himself. She
also had a strict check and balance on him to see whether that paisa was spent correctly or not.
By having a young boy actually looks for others in need to help; Edhi’s mother was creating the
heart of someone who could not turn away from the problems he saw around him. Finding and
helping people by actively practicing the habit of giving from early childhood onward also helps
Edhi to see and sympathize with the many social issues and difficulties people face in their lives.
As Edhi reached his early teens, his mother became very ill, requiring him to nurse her himself,
since they were very poor, and there was no one else to help him. By taking care of her for years,
Edhi became aware of the problems in healthcare faced by poor people. So, after migrating to
Pakistan after Partition, Edhi again faces the need to help poor people find medical care. “He
joined a local community organization, but when he tried to tend to those outside of his
community, other volunteers told him not to tend to those outside their community. This did not
settle well with him at all. After this Sir Edhi opened a dispensary,” His dispensary was free to
that in need, regardless of race, creed or color. This caused him some personal challenges, as
many did not understand the importance of helping anyone in need, because they only wanted to
help those in their own caste or religion. However, Edhi had a huge heart and felt compassion for
all the suffering of humanity. This is why he pushed onward to enlarge his ability to help those in
need by seeking a way to raise money and increase the number of services he could provide.
Edhi’s heart pushed him to find a vision for a better humanity, making him a hero for today.
5. Vision /goals and objectives of his life
His vision “is to help any person in need”. He said, “you have to care for all beings created by
God”. His foundation which is Edhi international foundation Australia, The vision of Edhi
International Foundation Australia is to help the disadvantaged segment of the population of
Pakistan by helping the Edhi Foundation Pakistan save lives, support orphans, provide shelters
for the needy women, to feed the starving and to be at the frontline of natural disasters and
humanitarian crisis, helping humans in need regardless of race or religion.

6. Natural traits/ application of big five model
Abdul Sattar Edhi exhibited his devotion as he continued to service others despite the numerous
personal threats and invasions he received. Regardless of numerous personal attacks, Abdul
Sattar Edhi stayed persistent with his work for the needy. The Edhi Foundation, Mr. Edhi's home
was robbed: They held Edhi and his staff at gunpoint broke open the security lockers and stole
nearly a million dollars' worth of cash, 11 pounds of gold and some jewelry. Some of this was
donation money, some cash and valuables that people had asked Edhi to keep for them... [Ehdi
responded to the robbery,] 'No matter how bad the situation here becomes, I won't give up. I will
not lose hope.' Edhi says he'll continue helping the poor and dispossessed until his dying breath.

Although year’s worth of money that Mr. Edhi struggled to raise was stolen, he remained
positive and persistent. Exemplifying strong attributes, Ehdi managed to stay dedicated,
continuing his work and consistently said how nothing would stop him but his own death. The
'Angel of Mercy' even preserved through the resistance of his own religious leaders.
He has all the quality of natural traits and he is best example of big five model.
7. Qualities of his personality
Abdul Sattar Edhi also known as angel of mercy, exemplified selflessness through his compassion, and
pure devotion to the destitute of Karachi, Pakistan, Edhi known for personally inspiring people exceeded
his own boundary and his legacy continues even after his death in 2016. In the decade since, Edhi
ambulance has become a symbol of friendship and welcome compassion throughout Pakistan
8. His natural leadership style
He is a servant leader who serves people. He is a real leader he strongly believes in his will
power. He has built a reputation as one of the most honorable human beings. Dr. Edhi follows
the afflictive leadership style by creating harmony and building emotional bonds as he always
tries to heal rifts in a team or to motivate his volunteers during stressful circumstances and
juggles competing forces and takes responsibility for his decisions.
From the transformational leadership perspective, Dr. Edhi is an achiever i.e. he meets strategic
goals and effectively achieves goals through teams; juggles managerial and supervisory duties
and stressful situation and is always action/goal oriented. He leads the volunteers of his
foundation from the front and sets in front of them a model by using ‘management by example’
methodology. Dr. Edhi strongly believes in his will power and positive thinking and he is a
centurion leader in its true sense and he earned the position at the cost of his own life and more
than 45 years of untiring and long lasting service to mankind. He has indeed a courageous heart,
an adventurous spirit, a quick mind and is a visionary soul.
