Understanding Yarn Count Systems

The document discusses different yarn count systems, including direct count systems that measure weight per unit length (e.g. tex, decitex, denier) and indirect count systems that measure length per unit weight (e.g. English cotton count, metric count). Yarn count is important for understanding yarn properties, comparing yarns, and purchasing yarns. The document provides definitions and examples of calculating yarn counts using different systems.

Yarn Counts

Yarn Manufacturing
Chamal Jayasinghe
Definition
• Definition : Count is the numerical expression which express/indicates coarseness or
fineness of yarn.

• A definition of yarn count is given by textile institute “count is a number indicating

the mass per unit length or the length per unit mass of yarn ”
Importance of yarn count
• 1. To have an idea about yarn fineness / roughness
• 2. To compare yarns
• 3. To understand the weight / length of a yarn quantity
• 4. For purchasing yarns / fabrics / etc.
• 5. To understand the behavior / properties of a fabric / yarn
Yarn Count Systems

• 1. Direct Count Systems

• 2. Indirect Count Systems
Direct Count System
• In this system the count of the yarn is weight per unit length of yarn.
In this case higher the count, coarser is the yarn.

• Tex, Decitex and Denier count systems are in this category

Indirect Count System
• In this system the count is the length per unit weight of yarn. In this
case higher the count, finer is the yarn.

• English Cotton Count system and Metric System falls in to this

category
Tex ( Direct count System )
• Weight of 1,000 meters of yarn in grams
Tex ( tex)
Exercise:
• 2000meters of yarn weights 2grams, calculate the tex count
• 100meters of yarn weights 0.5grams, calculate the tex count
• 10000meters of yarn weights 33grams, calculate the tex count
• 200yards of yarn weights 0.003 pounds, calculate the tex count

Hank = 840 yds , Pound = 453.59 grams , Meter = 1.093 yards

Decitex ( Direct count System )
• Weight of 10,000 meters of yarn in grams
Decitex ( dtex)
Exercise:
• 2500meters of yarn weights 5grams, calculate the decitex count
• 200meters of yarn weights 0.4grams, calculate the decitex count
• 12000meters of yarn weights 30grams, calculate the decitex count
• 300yards of yarn weights 0.003 pounds, calculate the decitex count

Hank = 840 yds , Pound = 453.59 grams , Meter = 1.093 yards

Denier ( Direct count System )
• Weight of 9,000 meters of yarn in grams
Denier ( den/D)
Exercise:
• 4500meters of yarn weights 5grams, calculate the denier count
• 900meters of yarn weights 0.6grams, calculate the denier count
• 12000meters of yarn weights 30grams, calculate the denier count
• 300yards of yarn weights 0.003 pounds, calculate the denier count

Hank = 840 yds , Pound = 453.59 grams , Meter = 1.093 yards

English Cotton Count
( Indirect Count System )

• Number of Hanks in 1 pound.

Hank = 840 yds , Pound = 453.59 grams , Meter = 1.093 yards

English Cotton Count
( Ne)

Exercise:
• 20 Hanks of yarn weights 1 pound , calculate the cotton count.
• 30 Hanks of yarn weight 2 pounds , calculate the cotton count.
• 8400 yards of yarn weights 1 pound , calculate the cotton count.
• 3842 meters of yarn weights 113.25 grams , calculate the cotton count.

Hank = 840 yds , Pound = 453.59 grams , Meter = 1.093 yards

Metric Count System
( Indirect Count System )

• Number of meters in 1 gram

Hank = 840 yds , Pound = 453.59 grams , Meter = 1.093 yards

Metric Count System
( Nm)

Exercise:
• 20 meters of yarn weights 1 gram , calculate the metric count.
• 30 meters of yarn weight 2 grams , calculate the metric count.
• 8400 meters of yarn weights 42 gram , calculate the metric count.
• 3842 yards of yarn weights 0.25 pounds , calculate the metric count.

Hank = 840 yds , Pound = 453.59 grams , Meter = 1.093 yards

Other Count Systems
• Woollen Count system ( Indirect Count System )
Weight in grain of 20yds of yarns
• Worsted Count System ( Direct Count System )
Number of *Hanks* ( 560 yards ) per pound

1grain = 0.0647grams
Cross Calculations
Exercise:
• Calculate the Cotton Count of 300 Denier Yarn
• Calculate the Metric Count of 100 Tex Yarn
• Calculate the Denier count of 20 Cotton Count Yarn
• Calculate the Tex count of 200 Metric count Yarn
The End
Exercise:
• Develop your own formulas to convert among Tex, Denier, Cotton and
Metric Counts.
