LI: We are learning about the different types of landscapes
SC: I will be able to explain what a landscape is
Landscapes:
A landscape is a section of the earth’s surface and is made up of a variety of geographical features
(known as a landform) that define and characterise it; landscapes can be natural (e.g. coastal and
mountain landscapes) or human (e.g. neighbourhoods and cities)
Tectonic plates:
Immense, slowly moving pieces that make up the Earth’s surface (or crust)
Erode means to wear away
Construct is to build up
Coastal landscape means when the land meets the sea
(e.g. Beaches)
River landscapes are used for agriculture (farming) and are used for crops because it is very fertile as
it has a lot of minerals and nutrients to grow food.
Desert Landscape is a desert area land that receives no more than 250 millimetres of rain per year,
deserts cover about one-third of the earth’s surface and contain some of the most uninhabitable
regions on the planet there are two types of deserts cold and hot, hot deserts are deserts located
along the tropics of cancer and Capricorn and cold deserts are closer to the poles (south n north) and
are shaped by the movement of ice in large glaciers and ice sheets.
Landform: A natural geographic feature or shape that appears on the Earth’s surface (e.g. dune, hill,
Valley, beach or cave)
Glacier: A river of ice in the mountain and polar landscapes
Ice sheet: A layer of ice covering a large area of land for a long period
Mountain Landscapes
Ridge
Glacier: A river of ice in the mountain and polar landscapes
Volcano
Desert Landscapes
Butte
Mesa
Oasis: where there is a source of water that supports vegetation and provides a respite from the
dry and barren surroundings
In your words describe landscapes.
A landscape is a section of the earth’s surface and is made up of a variety of geographical features
Identify what landscape is typically found along the tropics of cancer and Capricorn.
Hot Desert landforms are typically found along the tropics of cancer and Capricorn.
For each of the landforms describe the forces behind how they are made.
A mountain landscape is formed with tectonic plates pushing against each other or one tectonic plate goes up and the
other goes down.
A river landscape is formed from the natural movement of a water system like a river or stream
There are two ways that coastal landforms can form: either through erosion (the wearing away of land by waves and wind)
or through weathering (the building up of land through deposits of sand and other materials).
Large temperature differences between day and night put a lot of pressure on the rocks, which causes them to break apart
and create deserts. Even though it rains in deserts infrequently, there are intermittent downpours that could result in flash
floods.
Geomorphic Processes
Geomorphic: relating to the form of the landscape and other natural features of the earth’s surface
Geomorphic processes are processes that alter landforms and examples are erosion, deposition, tectonic activity and
avalanches.
Mountain landforms
Mountain ranges when there are multiple mountains
Volcanoes are openings in the earth’s crust
Glaciers are frozen water
Desert landforms
Oasis is an area with a water supply
Hamada area covered with boulders
Wadi dry watercourse in a narrow valley
River landforms
River has a waterway
Lake large body of water
Waterfall river water-spill
Coastal landforms
Cliffs steep rocks
Island area of land
Coral reef under the water ridge
COASTAL LANDFORMS CAN BE USED FOR
Tourism economic value
Farmed oysters for jewellery (aesthetic value)
Gas and oil (economic value)
Terraced:
Formed a flat area on a sloping piece of land, (such as a mountain face)
