Chitosan Extraction from Crab Shells

The crab shells were collected, cleaned, dried, and crushed into smaller particles. They were then calcined in a muffle furnace at 750 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes to remove impurities. Next, the shells were treated with NaOH solution, filtered, and washed to extract chitosan. The extracted substance was then dried and demineralized using dilute HCl to produce powdered chitosan.

The crab’s shells that were used in the study were collected by the student.

They were cleaned

and dried through sun drying for a week. To ensure that no excess moisture remains. The shells
were crushed into smaller particle sizes.

Calcination

The shells were heated using a muffle furnace at 750 degree celsius for 30 minutes. This was
done to remove the 5% impurities content of the shells. Then cool it down from 750 degree
celsius to 450 degree celsius. 10 minutes before getting the shells inside the furnace. The shells
were crushed into smaller sizes in order to easily remove the moisture and odor content of the
samples. Then grinded at 200 mesh to obtain uniform sized particles.

The crab shells were treated with NaOH solution. Then filtered and washed through the use of

Drying Dried Substance

After drying it in the oven, we demineralized it by using an extraction method using dilute
hydrochloric acid. Mixed the distilled water, HCL and NaOH. heated at 100 degree celsius for 30
minutes in the oven. Then spread it and dried it on a hot plate to produce powdered chitosan.
