SYNCHRONOUS MACHINES
+ A 3:phase 330 KVA, 3.3 KV , 50 Hz, 6 pole star connection synchronous generator has
@ synchronous reactance /phase 10 ohm.
Determine:
The excitation voltage E; and the load an,
igle for the generator at rated load and power
factor of 0.9 lagging.
‘i The current and power factor when the alternator operates at maximum torque
the current and torque when operating as a motor at 0.6 power factor leading
'v-the power factor when running as a generator delivering 80 A and with the excitation
adjusted to the same value as the ‘terminal voltage.
A 3-phase lossless two pole synchronous generator with 100 KVA, 440 V, star
Connection stator, 50 Hz has the following parameters
X, = Xs=Xq=0.6 pu , X =0.2 pu, X= 0.12 pu
No load voltage = 500 V
Determine:
the 3-phase steady state short circuit current and the transient and sub-transient
reactance from the envelope of the current/time following a sudden 3-phase short
Circuit when the stator terminals open circuit (Figure (1)).Derive an expression for the
short circuit current in a phase as function of time.
ii-the load resistance and the phase voltages V, , Vp and Vcat rated current under
unbalanced connection:
-line to neutral load.
-line to line load.
3- A3-phase, 50 MVA, 15 KV, 60 Hz synchronous generator has the following parameters:
X4=0.9pu , Xs=0.4 pu , Xs=0.2 pu , Teo=4 sec , Tyo = 0.6 sec, T,= 0.2 sec
The generator is delivering full load to the infinite bus at 0.9 lagging power factor.
A three phase short circuit suddenly occurs at the machine terminals. Determine:
i: the pre-fault values of the voltages behind the reactance,
ii the initial value of the maximum possible DC offset current in the machine,iii- obtain an expression for the machine fault current as a function of time
Consider the maximum possible DC offset current in the machine.
iv- the rms value of the machine fault current at t= 0.1 sec
4- A3-phase synchronous machine has the following parameters:
X=0.8pu , X,=0.3 pu
The field current of the synchronous machine is adjusted to produce an open circuit
voltage of 1 pu and the machine is synchronized to an infinite bus. Determine:
¥- the maximum per-unit torque that can be applied slowly without losing synchronism,
li- the maximum per-unit torque that can be applied suddenly after initial
synchronization without losing synchronism. Can this torque be sustained for long?
