Microscopy Lab: Plant and Animal Tissues

This document provides instructions for a biology laboratory activity on examining plant and animal tissues under a microscope. Students are assigned to groups and each group is given different prepared microscope slides to observe. The objectives are to examine tissue parts, differentiate plant and animal tissue types, and draw labeled diagrams of observations. The document outlines the materials, procedures, and questions needed to complete the activity.

Type of Activity: Performance Task Time Frame: Week 1

Introduction Theory

Tissues: A group of cells having similar structure, origin and functions is called a tissue. There are
two types of tissues — plant tissues and animal tissues.

In this activity you will be examine and study the visible structures of plant and animal tissues
under the microscope using the requested prepared slides.

Competency/ies 1. Distinguish prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells according to their distinguishing

features
2. Classify different cell types (of plant/animal tissues) and specify the functions of
each
Objectives: 1. To examine the parts of the tissues.
2. To differentiate different types of plants and animal tissues from prepared (permanent) slides
and to draw their labelled diagrams
3. Encourage the student to develop a healthy self-image.

Note: Always bring Group Kits and Individual Kits

Prepared Slides

1. Place the requested prepared slide designated by your instructor.

2. Focus the slide under the lowest power objective lens of the microscope and then the high-power objectives.
3. Draw your observation in the part of your activity worksheet. Include the following in your drawings: Give a short
description on the prepared slide.
4. All prepared slides must be drawn in your worksheet.

Note: Print the Laboratory Report Worksheet on the next page.

Analysis:

1. What are the four types of animal tissues?

The four types of animal tissues are epithelial tissues, connective tissues,
muscular tissues, and nervous tissues.

2. What is the most common feature of all epithelial cells?

The most common feature of all epithelial cells is that they form tightly bound
sheets of cells that tight junctions prevent the passage of molecules between cells. This is why one of the common
functions of all epithelial cells is for protection, others being sensation, absorption, and secretion.

3. What is the importance of the connective tissues to the body?

The importance of connective tissues to the body is their functions. These tissues are responsible for supporting,
structuring, transporting nutrients and oxygen, protecting, and repairing damaged tissues in the body.

4. What makes the different muscle tissues similar? What makes them different?
There is a similarity and many differences among the types of muscle tissues (smooth, skeletal, and cardiac muscle
tissues). The similarity of the three types of muscle tissues is that they are used for body movement, either voluntary or
involuntary. Their differences, conversely, are that they are located at different parts of the body. Smooth muscle tissues
are only found in the digestive system, walls of blood vessels, trachea, and in the urinary tract. Skeletal muscle tissues are

6
located at the muscles attached to a bone that they produce the shape of our body. Cardiac muscle tissues, of course, the
muscle tissues that comprises the heart.

5. Differentiate between the two types of vascular tissues.

In plants, the two types of vascular tissues are xylem and phloem. Xylem is responsible for transporting water and
dissolved minerals from the roots to the shoots and leaves. Phloem, on the other hand, is responsible for transporting
food from the leaves to the rest of the plant.
