Module 1: Indefinite Integral
Module 1 deals with the inverse differentiation (integration) or
simply the process of finding the function whose derivative is given.
Objectives of the Module:
Upon the completion of this course, the student must be able to:
1. To familiarize on the basic principles of integration and basic integration formulas.
2. To apply integration formulas in solving basic integration equations.
1.1 BASIC INTEGRATION
Antidifferentiation or Integration
- the process of finding a function whose derivative is unknown;
- the inverse of differentiation.
The required function is called an antiderivative or an integral of the given function
which is called the integrand.
! 𝒇(𝒙) 𝒅𝒙 = 𝑭(𝒙) + 𝑪
Where: f(x) – integrand
dx – the differential that indicates that x is the variable of integration.
F(x) – Particular integral
C – constant of integration
F(x) + C – indefinite integral of f(x)
∫- the integral sign
Indefinite Integral
- the set of all antiderivatives for a function f(x).

Examples: Evaluate the following:
1. ∫ 𝑒 '! 𝑑𝑥
Solution:
If u = 4x, therefore du = 4dx. But in the original equation, only dx can be seen. In order to
satisfy our formula (1), we will put a correcting factor or neutralizing factor to the equation.
The correcting factor or neutralizing factor is the reciprocal of the number which we wish to
introduce after the integral sign or preceding dx.
