Reflection paper to Corazon C. Aquino's Speech


Unlike what most people would believe, Maria Corazon "Cory" Cojuanco Aquino's
leadership was more than just reinstating democracy. She fervently promoted peace and
harmony among the Filipino people while heading the People's Power Revolution. She became
a fearless role model for women and women in power while leading the country and making
contributions to a global women's movement. The continuation of democracy and the
establishment of a Constitution to the present day demonstrate how significant her efforts
were in the Philippines not just an individual with political experience, positions of authority, or
military expertise, but a courageous woman committed to make the Philippines a country of
the people, Corazon Aquino defined what the presidency really is.

Corazon "Cory" Aquino served as the 11th President of the Philippines and the country's
first female President. When her husband passed away, she ran for president, won the election,
and served as president from 1986 until 1992. She referred to the hardships her husband,
Benigno Simeon Aquino, Jr., through under the Marcos dictatorship up until the day of his
demise, which sparked the revolution she termed "the cheapest and most peaceful revolution"
in her address. Corazon also demonstrated her determination and resolve to defend the
Philippines from anyone posing a threat to the newly achieved peace that her people had
attained. She continued by outlining the economic position in the Philippines during the Marcos
administration, including the 26 billion dollar foreign debt from which they never benefitted
and the interest payments that the Filipino people are required to pay. She then pleaded for
the American government's help and encouragement in addressing the matter at hand.
Furthermore, she appreciated America for providing her family with a three-year protection
from injustice and pleaded for a further refuge for her people.

The speech given by Corazon Aquino helped the Philippines recover economically from
the administration of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. The speech is really very beneficial in
comprehending the overarching story of Philippine history, especially in this day and age when
only online sources for false information and biased stories exist. I and others can learn how
brutal the government during the dictatorship by reading the manuscript and rewatching the
speech on youtube. This helps us understand how the daring and concerted efforts of everyone
in the Philippines led to our liberation from the dictator's control. This impacted me deeply and
made me appreciate how courageous Filipinos are to fight for our freedom even when doing so
puts their life in danger. Thanks to resources like these that document such vibrant acts, this
deed of bravery is still recognized and will be passed along to the next generation.
Her contributions to our nation, in my opinion, will endure eternally in our hearts. She
will be an inspiration to us, and her tragic death will teach us to be thoughtful and awake,
especially when we choose our country's next leader in the upcoming election. Before
something gets out of hand, we Filipinos need to get active. Our sad flaw is that we only act
when the situation is already oppressive. We Filipinos must cooperate because if we stand as
one, goodness, truth, and unity will triumph.
