1.0 INTRODUCTION

An at-risk youth is a child who is less likely to transition successfully into adulthood. Success
can include academic success and job readiness, as well as the ability to be financially
independent. It also can refer to the ability to become a positive member of society by
avoiding a life of crime.

At-risk youth are often identified after running away, skipping school, drinking underage,
engaging in sexual behaviour, displaying disruptive behaviour, bullying/harassment, fighting,
and committing acts of vandalism. These behaviours can put them at risk of dropping out of
school, acquiring low paying jobs and/or unemployment, and adult criminal behaviour. Life
transitions can be challenging and daunting for them. Due to this they are more vulnerable
and prone to mental health related issues. As such, this has become the basis for our skills
training program.

The aim of creating and delivering this program is to provide appropriate soft skills training
pertaining emotional regulation, resilience, building communication, and time management.

Having a dedicated venue like MySkills Foundation provides a consistent and controlled environment to implement structured training, essential for ensuring focus and engagement among participants throughout the program .

The collaboration leverages MySkills Foundation's understanding of at-risk youth needs with the Master of Clinical Psychology Program's expertise in psychological interventions, enabling a well-rounded approach to developing essential life skills for participants .

At-risk youth often engage in behaviors such as running away, skipping school, underage drinking, and more, which may lead them to drop out of school, obtain low-paying jobs, or become unemployed, increasing vulnerability to adult criminal behavior. These challenges in successful life transitions, along with a higher susceptibility to mental health issues, inspired the skills training program focused on emotional regulation, resilience, communication, and time management .

Effective logistical planning, managed by the logistics team, involves coordinating session scheduling, participant grouping, facilitator allocation, and resource management to ensure seamless session progression and environment setup, contributing significantly to program success .

Facilitators gain practical experience in delivering interventions, enhancing their learning and competency as future psychologists. However, they may face challenges in addressing diverse participant needs and maintaining engagement, requiring adaptability and problem-solving skills .

The successful execution of the program relies on the advisor, chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary, treasurer, and logistics team, each ensuring smooth management and operation. The advisor provides strategic direction, the chairperson oversees execution, and other roles support by managing finances, communication, and logistics .

Grouping participants aged 13-15 and 16-18 allows for tailored interventions that accommodate the distinct social, cognitive, and emotional developmental needs of these age groups, promoting effective skill acquisition .

The skills training program provides adolescents with tools for emotional regulation, resilience, communication, and time management, addressing key vulnerabilities they face . Simultaneously, it offers Master of Clinical Psychology students practical experience in conducting interventions, which is an integral part of their education .

Participants are expected to improve in areas such as emotional regulation, resilience, communication, and time management, which can lead to better academic and social outcomes, ultimately reducing risks associated with negative behaviors and poor life transitions .

Each training session is structured with an ice-breaking activity, two group sessions, and a debriefing, incorporating breaks in between. This organization facilitates initial engagement, active learning, and reflection, which can enhance the acquisition of skills such as emotional regulation and communication .
