Foundation Engineering Group Assignment

The document provides details for two group assignments in a foundation engineering course. The first assignment involves designing a pad foundation to support a column, including determining the base size and reinforcement to resist bending, shear, and punching shear. The second assignment involves determining the ultimate bearing capacity of a concrete pile driven into stratified subsoil, considering the properties of sand and clay layers.

Group Assignment (15 %)

1) A pad foundation is required to support a single square column transferring an axial load
only.
The footing is founded on a medium strength clay layer which has the following
characteristic parameters:
o Undrained strength cuk = 45 kPa
o Saturated unit weight, γsat = 21 kN /m3
o Depth of footing = 1.5 m

Using the data provided:

 Determine a suitable base size (width),

 Check the footing base with respect to:
o Bending,
o Beam (vertical) shear, and
o Punching shear,
 Designing suitable reinforcement where necessary.

Design Data:
Characteristic dead load on column 800 kN
Characteristic imposed load on column 300 kN
Characteristic concrete strength fck = 40 N/mm2
Characteristic of reinforcement fyk = 460 N/mm2
Column dimensions 375 mm * 375 mm
Exposure condition Sever (Cover is 50mm)

2) A concrete pile is driven into the top two layers of subsoil strata. The subsoil profile and
properties are shown in the figure. The groundwater table is not found during the subsoil
exploration. The pile’s diameter is 50 cm throughout the pile. Determine the ultimate
bearing load of the pile.
