German Adjectives: Comparatives & Superlatives

This document discusses how to form the comparative and superlative forms of adjectives in German. 1) To form the comparative, add "-er" to the end of most adjectives. 2) To form the superlative, add "-sten" to adjectives ending in consonants and "-ste" to adjectives ending in vowels or "-ß". "Am" is used before the adjective. 3) Exceptions to the rules include changing vowels to umlauts and dropping final "e" for some adjectives in the comparative.

Komparation

(Positiv + Komparativ + Superlativ)

- Used when we want to compare things

- The comparative form is used when one thing is bigger, smaller, better, worse, more
interesting, less interesting, etc. than another.

● Normal Adjektive ⇒ ,,Das Haus ist groß.“ (+) - The house is big.

● Komparativ ⇒ „Das Haus ist größer.“ (++) - The houses bigger

● Superlativ ⇒ „Das Haus ist am größten.“ (+++)- The house is the biggest

Z.b. Ein Hund ist schnell. Aber die Katze ist schneller.

● In Komparativ you only need to add +er at the end of the adjektiv

Wie bildet Man Sie?

Adjektiv Komparativ (+er) Aussage

schön schöner (more beautiful) Die Schuhe sind schöner.

billig billiger (cheaper) Die Wohnung ist billiger.

gross grosser Er ist grosser.

Points to remember in Comparative:

1. With adjectives ending in ,,er” and ,,el’’ -just drop the ,,e’’ and replace with ,,er’’

Dunkle = dunkler

Teuer = Tuerer

Sensibel = Sensibler

Flexibel = Flexibler

2. Einsilbige Adjektive (monosyllabic) ,,a , o , u - change to umlaut +er

Lang = länger

Groß = größer

3. Superlativ = add ,,+sten’’ at the end of the adjective and add ,,am’’ before the
adjective

shoen shöner am shönsten

sauber sauberer am saubersten

4. For adjectives ending in „d,“ „t,“ „s,“ „ß,“ „x,“ or „z,“ form the superlative with
„-esten“ . There is only one exception groß which is groeßten

Wild = wildesten

Kalt = kältesten (change a to umlaut and add esten)

Kurz = kürzesten

Alt = ältesten
