Problem set 1: Vibration Engineering
1. A spring has a stiffness of 800 N/m. If a 2-kg block is attached to the spring, pushed
50 mm above its equilibrium position, and released from rest, determine the
equation that describes the block’s motion. Assume that positive displacement is
downward.
2. Determine the differential equation of motion of the 3-kg block when it is displaced
slightly and released. The surface is smooth and the springs are originally
unstretched.
3. Determine the equivalent spring constant of the system shown in figure below.
4. An automobile is found to have a natural frequency of 20 rad/s without passengers
and 17.32 rad/s with passengers of mass 500 kg. Find the mass and stiffness of the
automobile by treating it as a single-degree-of-freedom system.
5. A damped single-degree-of-freedom system has m = 5 kg, c = 500 N-s/m, and
k = 5000 N/m. Determine the undamped and damped natural frequencies of
vibration and the damping ratio of the system.
