Thermal Relief Device Sizing Equations

This document contains equations from API 521/ISO 23251:2007 for approximating expansion rates of liquids in relief devices protecting against thermal expansion. The equations calculate the volumetric flowrate (V) and cubic expansion coefficient (B) based on initial and final temperatures, densities, heat capacity, specific gravity, and total heat transfer rate. As an example, the equations are applied to a water injection system using sample parameter values, resulting in a V of 0.03 m3/h and B of 0.00111 1/°C.

Equations from API 521/ISO 23251:2007, Section 5.14, Hydraulic Expansion.

For liquid full systems expansion rates for the sizing of relief devices that protect against thermal expansion of the trapped
liquids can be approximated using the following equations. This does not account for the vapourisation of liquids.

BQ 3
V  m /s Input
Output
1000 S g C p

1 2   2 2
B
2(T2  T1 ) 1  2

V = volumetric flowrate at flowing temperature

B = cubic expansion coefficient
T1 = initial temperature of fluid at blocked in pressure = 15.5 °C Note-1
T2 = final temperature of fluid at relieving pressure = 48.0 °C Note-2
ρ1 = initial density (at operating condition 1500 psig, 15.6°C, min WI temp.) = 1031.0 kg/m3
ρ2 = final density (at relieving condition 48°C and 2040.5 psig ) = 994.4 kg/m3
Cp = initial specific heat = 4200.0 J/kgK
Sg = specific gravity at final conditions = 0.994
Q = total heat transfer rate = 34000.0 W Note-3,4

B = 0.00111 1/°C

V = 0.0000 m /s
= 0.03 m3/h
= 32.42 kg/h

Notes:
1. Minimum water supply temperature
2. Maximum ambient temperature (refer Process Design Basis)
3. Assuming 51.3 m length of 8" (0.2032 m) Water Injection manifold exposed to solar radiation,
surface area = π x 0.2032 x 51.3 = ~ 32.7 m2.
4. Assuming Solar Radiation intensity as 1.04 kW/m2,
Total Heat Transfer Rate = Solar Radiation Intenisty x Surface Area exposed = 1.04 x32.7 = 34 kW.
