The Internet harms friendships
The Internet is suppose to bring people closer together but it's
harm my friendships.
When my friends and I started communicate online, we used email
and first instant messaging. When Facebook arrived, we ‘friended’
each other. Then we started using Twitter. Now, we usually talk face
to face at all and so ‘tweets’ can't exceed 140 characters, we
seldom say anything meaningful.
The Internet also makes communication impersonal. I've has friends
telling me they're hardly busy to phone me, yet they spend hours on
social media sites, uploading photos or forward silly videos. I asked
one friend why she never emailed me anymore. She replies that
emailing me weren’t efficient because I'm only one person, whereas
social media posts can reach hundreds of people in once!
Online communication also causes misunderstandings so people
can’t sees your body language or hear your tone of voice. Once, after
my friend posted some holiday photos, I asked her whether she have
went anywhere interesting lately. She got irritated because she
thought I was saying her photos was boring. She didn't know I was
being sarcastic about how bored my life is compared to hers.
Furthermore, the Internet makes people slightly self-focused. They
constantly chat about every little detail of their lifes. Does anyone
really care that you just ate a pork bun? The big rule of friendship are
where it's about two-way communication, not just about yourself.
The Internet helps friendships.
Online social networking helps friendships in many way.
First, the internet makes communication most convenient. If it’s too
late to go out or almost noise to call, I can text a friend or share
comments online. Even if I’m extremely busy, I can never 'tweet' a
quick reply. Thanks to the Internet, I’ve reconnect with several old
friend from primary school too.
Social networking also makes communicating more interested. It's
difficult to share photos and run trivia like surveys and strange news
stories. This gives us a widest variety of things to talk about, rather
then the same old topics, like schoolwork. Besides, I'd never have
time to call everyone individually, but online I can communicate to
much people at once.
In addition, internet communication lets me interact with others while
remaining invisible! I can chat in my pyjamas or when my hair’s in a
mess because no one sees me. Even if I have a bad cough and can't
talk on the phone, I can still chat online.
Finally, online communication allow friends to share what's
happen at that moment. We can exchange details about what
we're doing on the spot before it slips our minds. One time, a friends
asked me to tell her what the food was alike at a restaurant she
planned to visit, because I sent her photos of the dishes I was eating,
knowing she'd wanted to try them. Instant sharing like this helps us
feel much connected with each other.
