“With Great power, comes great responsibility”

This is a proverb that has been used for a fairly long time throughout history, originating all
the way back to even BC. But despite that, I’m sure most of your first thoughts were
involving Spider-Man, and his Uncle Ben.

I think something like this alone instantly proves the point I’m going to make today, and that
being how comics have changed the world significantly.

So first let’s go allllllllll the way back to the 1930’s, and the dawn of superheroes…sorta.
Know here I mean the beginning of like actual superheroes, you know, the cape wearing
good guys, that defied all logic, just kicked ass, and met a variety of crazy characters. But if
you go even further back, you can see characters like the masked Zoro, and the scarlet
pimpernel, who are essentially the first superheroes, but not, if you get what I mean, them
being much more hero then super.

Now getting back on topic, even with the inspirations out of the way, it is still very hard to
say where “the start of superheroes took place, as there are so many characters around this
era that could be considered superheroes, but also not at the same time, so essentially, ‘the
start of superhero’s is way vaguer than you would think. So, to save time and my own sanity,
I’m going to start at were this phenomenon actually started to become a big thing, that
taking us to April 1938, with the first ever appearance of Superman.

Now superman symbolises every that superheroes are, and still to this day is arguably the
most famous of them all. He is a symbol of pure good and uses his abilities to help others,
not because he has to, but just because he can. This idea of a incredible power saving the
world was actually inspired by the world itself. During this time, the great depression was
still affecting America, and Superman was made to symbolise a beacon of hope, that would
help save everyone in this time of need.

This is a trend that you will find in pretty much every superhero, that being them reflecting
their era of creation. They are usually made in reflection of peoples dreams and desires
reflect that period. An example of this can be seen in the likes of quite a lot of the tech savvy
heroes, such as the fantastic 4 and Iron man. In their period, the government and many
people of America were trying to pioneer technology and science, with many significant
scientific events happening, such as the moon landing.

Over the years, as the world changed, so did comics. They began to start tackling many real-
world issues, and begin to make much more serious, dark comics. I believe that comics
beginning to tackle these more mature and shun stories is one of the best things they could
have done, as it helped to educate and inform younger people about these topics.

So, I went and did some interviews with some people, and looked at just how comics have
influenced people.

I feel that comics and superheroes have changed the world in way more ways than most
people even realise. They are a reflection of the world itself, and show just how our minds
have changed in how we view the world.
