whole numbers with or without exponents and
grouping symbols.
Session 5: “My Dear Aunt Sally orders the operation”
Duration of Session: 90minutes
Target Audience Grade 6
Session Goal At the end of the lesson the learners are expected to

the participants at the end of the lesson.
(see slide 1-5)
20 minutes Activity Introduce the activity to the participants by
giving Pre – Test to determine the
understanding of the learners.
Read the items below. Write the letter of the correct
answer on your answer sheet.

5?
A. 180 B. 108
C. 118 D. 181
4) In applying the rules of order of operations, what
operation should be done last in the expression 8 x 5 +
4 – 2?
A. multiplication B. division
C. addition D. subtraction
5) What is the second operation to be done in the
expression 27 – 12 ÷ 4 x 4 + 5?

A. subtraction B. division
C. multiplication D. addition
● Ask the learners to share their early morning
routines. Then discuss the importance of the order
of the events and lead the discussion to the Order
of Operations.
● Ask the learners to study and analyze the given
problem.
1. 6 + 2 – 15 ÷ 5 x 2 = _____
2. 9 ÷3 + 7 x 4 ÷ 2 = _______
3. 12 ÷ 6 + 5 x 3 = ________
4. 7 x 5 + 3 ÷ 4 x 9 – 2 = _______
5. 12 ÷ 4 – 3 + 5 = _____________
● Define and state MDAS rule (Multiplication,
Division, Addition and Subtraction)
State that in a series of operations without
grouping symbols, recall the following MDAS
rule. That is performing multiplication or
division (whichever comes first), followed by
addition or subtraction (whichever comes first).
(Show solution and compare their answers)
1. 6 + 2 – 15 ÷ 5 x 2 = _____
2. 9 ÷3 + 7 x 4 ÷ 2 = _______
3. 12 ÷ 6 + 5 x 3 = ________
4. 7 x 5 + 3 ÷ 3 x 9 – 2 = _______
5. 16 ÷ 4 – 3 + 5 = _____________
(See slide 7-19)
20 minutes Analysis
● When grouping symbols are involved in a
mathematical expression, we follow the GEMDAS
rule wherein:
G – grouping symbols
E – exponents
M – multiply
D – divide

A – add
S - subtract
● Let the learners watch

● Let the learners study the given examples
● Ask the learners “What do you think will happen if
we do not follow the correct order of operation in
solving mathematical equations?
● Give more examples to deepen the understanding
of the learners
1. (13 – 5) x 3 + 7 – 8
2. 122 ÷ 4 – 3 x 24
3. 6 x 8 – (42 + 2) + 72 ÷ 8
4. 7(5 + 3) ÷ 4(9 – 2)
5. 5 - [(4 + 2 x 23)] ÷ 10
● Note: The participants will be given 60 seconds to
solve each problem and type their answers on the
comment box. And then discuss their answers
Provide opportunity for clarifications and more
questions
(See slide 20-26)
5 minutes Abstraction/Generalization
● Ask the learners “How do we simplify mathematical
equations involving grouping symbols and
exponent”?
o Simplify the operations in grouping symbols.
Start from the innermost grouping symbol
o Evaluate exponential expressions
o Multiply and divide in the order they appear
from left to right
o Add and subtract in the order from they
appear from left to right
o GEMDAS rules means Grouping symbols,

● Why is it important to follow the correct order in
solving mathematical equations? How does this
lesson help us in our daily activities?
o Answers may vary
(See slide 27-31)
35 minutes Application-
● Let the learners do suggested activities:
Activity 1. Write T if the statement is true and write F if
the statement is false. In the GEMDAS rule……
1. we add first before we multiply
2. we solve for exponents before we subtract
3. we add before we divide
4. we add and subtract before we multiply
5. we work on the exponents before we work
inside parentheses
6. we add after we work on exponents
7. we work inside parentheses after we multiply
8. we subtract before working on exponents
9. we divide before we subtract
10. we subtract before we multiply
Activity 2: Simplify the following expressions:
1. 8 (2 + 5) ÷ [24 – (5 x 4)]
2. 6 + 2 (5 – 8)2 ÷ 3
3. 9 – (11 + 8) (48 ÷ 6)
4. 2[3 (2 x 3) + 27 – 4 – 23]
5. 8 – 4 (2 + 52) ÷ 12
(See slide 32-35)
5 minutes Closing the Session
● Entertain questions from the learners
● Give additional enrichment activities to measure
the mastery of the lesson or assignment.
Activity: Give the correct answer
Andy bought a guitar for P1,200.00. Then she paid
P250.00 for each of the 4 sessions of guitar lessons.
Give the mathematical equation and solve.
