Designer Profile: Okomido

A perfect mArriAge of old And new is how designer Midori Ferris Wayne describes her ecoconscious jewelry line, Okomido. The line takes its name from the European oko (translating to eco in English) and Ferris Waynes nickname Mido. Reflecting the eco reference in the name, she uses only reclaimed materials and heirloom jewelry to create these works of art. In fact, it was her love of vintage jewelry and the history behind each piece that became her design inspiration. While working as an assistant at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, she was encouraged by the jewelry curator to rework damaged auction gallery jewelry into new pieces. She officially started Okomido in 2008 and now designs from her studio in Sonoma County, California, working with local artisans to help produce her hand-fabricated designs. One of her newest collections, Sticks n Stones, is inspired by the local vineyards and uses a unique alloy of gold and copper called shakudo, which gives the jewelry its chocolate brown coloring.
