How is pressure transmitted in liquids and what is
the principle behind it?
• Pressure in a liquid is transmitted through a fundamental principle known
as Pascal's law or Pascal's principle. This principle, named after the French
mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal, states that when an external
pressure is applied to a confined fluid at any point, that pressure is
transmitted undiminished throughout the fluid in all directions. In other
words, any change in pressure applied to a liquid is transmitted equally to
all points in the liquid, without any loss of intensity.

Incompressibility of Liquids
• Liquids are considered incompressible, which means their
volume doesn't change significantly when subjected to pressure.
This is because the molecules in a liquid are closely packed and
have very little room to move closer together or farther apart. As
a result, when pressure is applied to a liquid, the molecules in the
liquid cannot be compressed, and they transmit this pressure
uniformly throughout the fluid.

Pascal's Principle
• When you apply a force, or pressure, to a liquid in a closed or confined system, it creates a change in
pressure that is distributed equally in all directions within the liquid. This means that if you push or apply
pressure to the surface of a liquid, the entire body of the liquid responds to this force by transmitting the
pressure uniformly throughout.
• Hydraulic Systems: Pascal's principle has practical applications, especially in hydraulic systems. These
systems use the principle to multiply force and transmit it over a distance. A hydraulic system typically
consists of a closed container filled with a liquid, such as hydraulic oil. When a force is applied to one
side of the system, it causes an increase in pressure on that side, and this increased pressure is
transmitted throughout the liquid. Since pressure is equal in all directions, it can be used to lift heavy
objects or perform other mechanical work by connecting the system to a piston or cylinder.

Depth and Pressure
• In a static liquid, the pressure increases with depth due to the weight of the
liquid above it. This relationship is described by the hydrostatic pressure
formula: P = ρgh, where P is pressure, ρ is the density of the liquid, g is the
acceleration due to gravity, and h is the depth of the liquid. This formula
demonstrates that pressure increases linearly with depth, and it is due to the
transmission of pressure throughout the liquid.

Summary
• In summary, pressure is transmitted in liquids through Pascal's principle,
which ensures that any change in pressure applied to a confined liquid is
distributed equally in all directions. This principle has numerous practical
applications, including hydraulic systems and understanding how pressure
varies with depth in a liquid. It is important for engineers and scientists in
various fields, including fluid dynamics and mechanical engineering, to
consider Pascal's principle when designing systems or studying the behavior
of liquids under pressure.
