Steps/Procedure:
Wall Framing
1 Start wall framing with a good house plan, showing the layout of the wall,
the location of openings and any special features like furnace plenums or
electrical boxes. Build walls on a flat solid surface, like a driveway or slab
foundation, and raise walls in designated locations once they are completed.
2 Lay two 2-by-4-inch boards the length of the wall together with the 2-inch
edges up and ends flush to make top and bottom plates. Mark stud locations
with a tape measure, speed square and pencil. Draw a line with the square
and pencil across both studs 1 1/2 inches from the back end of the wall, to
locate the inside of the first end stud.
[Link] 15 1/4 inches in from the end of the plates with a tape measure
and draw another line across both plates, to mark the outside of the second
stud. Measure and mark 16-inch increments based on that line the length of
the wall. Skip spaces for window and door openings but make sure there is a
full stud at the indicated outsides of each opening.
4. Place the marked plates on a flat surface and connect them on each end
with full studs, typically called 8-foot studs although they actually will be
shorter to allow for the plates. Nail end studs in place through the plates with
16d framing nails and a hammer, two nails into the end of each stud.
5. Square the wall frame by measuring corner to corner with a tape measure
and adjusting the rectangle until those diagonals are identical. Nail a full stud
at the first location inside each end to secure the square, then install other
studs at every marked interval. Omit studs at the marked door, window or
other openings.
6. Frame doors and windows separately and set completed frames into the
wall. Build these frames with a full stud on the outside of each opening,
spaced for the designed width. Make horizontal headers of 2-by-6-inch boards
cut to the designated width with a circular saw. Cut a strip of plywood or
oriented strand board to the dimension of these boards and fasten the three
elements together with framing nails. Use a level to set the header level.
7. Set a header in place between the studs and nail it through the studs into
the 2-by-6 ends. Make a comparable sill plate for the bottom of window
openings, but with 2-by-4-inch boards with 4-inch edges together. Support
headers and sill plates with "trimmer" studs cut to fit between the bottoms of
the header and the sill plate, for a window, or bottom plate, for a door.
8. Measure the gaps between headers and top plates and sill plates and
bottom plates and cut short studs to fill those spaces. Set these studs on 16-
inch centers from the outside studs or in the center of the opening, depending
on the width. Put the completed frame into the wall in the designated space in
the wall and fasten it with framing nails through the plates into the ends of each
stud.
Steps/Procedure:
Wall Framing
1. Cut each joist to light. Sight down the edge of the joist to determine
where the crown is. Trim off the corners that will extend above the
rafters.
2. Distribute the joists around the building so that they can be lifted into
place
3. Place each joist with the crown up. Alight the end of the ceiling joist with
the outside edge of the exterios wall plate.
4. At one end, toenail tree old nails through the joist and into the plate or
use a metal framing connector.
5. In framing for a hip roof with a shallow slope, the first joist will interfere
with the bottom edge of the rafters.
