Sliding Bearings Sample Problems

This document contains 4 sample problems related to sliding bearings. The problems provide values for bearing dimensions, load, rotational speed, oil properties, and clearance. The tasks are to determine friction loss in kW, oil viscosity, frictional torque, horsepower loss, and coefficient of friction. The solutions show using equations for friction force, torque, power loss, and viscosity to calculate the requested values given the operating conditions and properties of the bearings and lubricating oil.

1. ME Board Exam
October 27, 1987

The main bearings of one cylinder steam engine are 152 mm diameter and 280 mm long and
support a load of 4400kg. The bearings are well ventilated and are heavy in construction. The
coefficient of friction in bearings is 0.017 and crankshaft rotates at 450 rpm. Bearing diametral
clearance is 0.152 mm. Determine the following:

a) Friction loss in KW per bearing

b) Lubricating oil viscosity in centipoise at the operating temperature.

Given:
D = 152mm f = 0.017
L = 280mm N = 450rpm = 7.5rps
W = 4400kg Cd = 0.152mm

2. ME Board Problem
April 22, 1987

A shaft revolving at 1740 rpm is supported by a bearing with a length of 105 mm and a
diameter of 64 mm. If the load is light and SAE oil No. 20 is used with an average temperature
of 65°C and diameter clearance of 0.136 mm, what would be the loss of power due to friction.
Express your answer in kW.

Given:
SAE 20 oil @ T = 65oC
