Key Statistics Concepts Explained

This document provides definitions and formulas for key statistics terms including: - The mean, median, mode, range, quartiles, and interquartile range of ungrouped data. Formulas are given for finding the median, quartiles, and interquartile range based on data size. - Examples are shown for calculating statistics like the mean, median, and range for sample ungrouped data sets. - Key aspects of grouped data are defined, including using midpoints and frequencies to calculate statistics like the mean and median. Formulas integrate midpoints and frequencies to find values.

UNGROUPED DATA

KEY POINTS:
• The mean of a series of numbers is obtained by adding the numbers and dividing the result by the
number of numbers.
• The median of a series of numbers is abtained by arranging the numbers in ascending order and then
1
choosing then number in the ‘middle’. To find its position, we calculate 2 (𝑛 + 1), where n is the

number of data.
• The mode of a series of numbers is the number which occurs most often.
• The range of a series of numbers is the difference between the largest value and the smallest value.
• The lower quartile is the value one quarter of the way along the data. To find its position, we
1
calculate 4 (𝑛 + 1), where n is the number of data.

• The upper quartile is the value three quarters of the way along the data. To find its position, we
3
calculate 4 (𝑛 + 1), where n is the number of data.

• The interquartile range is the difference between the upper quartile and lower quartile.
