Introduction
Measuring dovetail of a workpieces, such as cones or cylinders with a non-constant diameter
along their length, requires specialized tools and techniques to ensure accurate and precise
measurements.

Objectives:
1- Internal dovetail of a workpiece.
2- External dovetail of a workpiece.
3- Internal and external dovetail of a selected machine tool parts.

Equipment
Surface plates:
Measuring rolls:

Vernier depth calipers:

Vernier bevel protractor:

Procedure:
1- Measure the diameter of the measuring rolls, three measurements of each roll should
be taken and determine the average.
2- Put the measuring rolls inside the internal dovetail as shown in Fig. 4.1.
3- Measure the distance m using a vernier caliper.
4- Measure the angle α by the vernier bevel protractor.
5- Measure the height h by the vernier depth gauge.
6- Determine b from the following formula:

α
b=m+ D(1+cot cot )
2

And c from

c=b−2 h cot cot α

7- Draw the internal dovetail according to the results obtained from your measurements.
